'Run' Movie Ending Explained: Let's Talk About That Crazy Twist!

SPOILER ALERT – This post will contain major plot points from the movie Run, so beware of reading further!

Run is a brand-new movie that is streaming now on Hulu and it’s a suspenseful thriller with some big twists. The film was originally supposed to hit theaters back in May, but the streaming service acquired the project amid the pandemic.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis: “They say you can never escape a mother’s love… but for Chloe, that’s not a comfort — it’s a threat. There’s something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) and her mom, Diane (Sarah Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe’s only beginning to grasp.”

At the beginning of the movie, a title card reveals the five illnesses that Chloe has, or is made to believe she has: Arrhythmia, hemochromatosis, asthma, diabetes, and paralysis.

Right at the beginning of the movie, Chloe begins to figure out that her mom is drugging her and discovers that she has been taking a dog medication that is meant to numb their legs after surgery.

Diane ends up imprisoning Chloe in their home and she’s able to escape twice. The second time, she poisons herself to force her mom to take her to the hospital. Before this happens, she discovers that Diane isn’t actually her biological mom. After Diane’s actual daughter Chloe died two hours after birth, she kidnapped another child from the hospital, who is the Chloe we’ve been watching.

At the hospital, Chloe is being treated for attempted suicide, but Diane finds a way to kidnap her again. When a nurse sounds the alarm after noticing Chloe’s disappearance, the security guards find them. Diane, who is armed, is shot in the shoulder by a guard and she falls down a staircase.

SEVEN YEARS LATER!

The movie flashes forward to seven years later and we see Chloe visiting Diane in an institution. She gives her mom an update on her life, including how she has a husband and child, as well as a relationship with her biological parents. She’s also now working in the medical field, which was her dream.

Diane appears to be in a state of paralysis and just stares at Chloe while she speaks. Before she leaves, Chloe pulls out a bag of pills from the back of her mouth. The green and white pill that was meant for dogs is among the pills.

“I love you Mom. Now open wide,” Chloe says while Diane’s eyes widen in horror and the movie cuts to black.

So, what just happened there?! Chloe is flipping the script on her mom Diane and giving her a dose of her own medicine, quite literally. She’s now drugging her mom to make her even more sick, just as Diane did to her for her entire life.
