Who Killed Elena on 'The Undoing'? Series Finale Spoilers Revealed!

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading if you don’t want to know what happened in the series finale of The Undoing!

The sixth and final episode of The Undoing, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, aired on Sunday night (November 29) – and we finally know who killed Elena.

The Undoing focuses on Kidman’s Grace Fraser, a successful therapist, her husband, Jonathan (Grant), and their young son Henry (Noah Jupe) who attends an elite private school in New York City.

Following the death of the mother of a student Henry’s school, Jonathan becomes the prime murder suspect and is arrested for the crime. Throughout the series, twists and turns put doubt on who actually killed Elena Alves.

Who are the possibilities? There’s of course Jonathan, who had an affair with Elena after treating her son’s cancer. She became obsessed with both him and his with Grace. On the night of the murder, he visited Elena at her art studio and they made love. He claims that he left and later returned to find Elena murdered, so he decided to flee as he knew he would look guilty.

Another possibility is Elena’s husband Fernando. Jonathan and his legal team have tried to paint him as a suspect, seemingly that he might have been jealous if he learned of her affair.

At the end of episode five, Henry became a possibility when the murder weapon was discovered by his mom in his violin case.

After Grace finds the hammer, Henry proclaims that he is innocent and that he found it at the outdoor firehouse at their beach house. He then said that he hid it to protect his father, who he firmly believes killed Elena.

Jonathan once again denied everything, suggesting that Fernando planted the hammer to frame him, before going as far to suggest that Henry actually killed Elena.

The next day, Jonathan takes the stand at his murder trail. He tries to maintain his innocence and explains that he was in love with Elena, and that her son Miguel was like a son to him. He also said that he fled town because he panicked. However, he didn’t have a answer as to why he took his suit to the dry cleaners.

Grace then insists that she takes the stand so that she can defend Jonathan. While being questioned, she says tells the jury that Jonathan “could not have done this” because he is a “gentle man.”

However, the prosecution gets her to admit – with help from her 911 call – that she feared for her life when Jonathan showed up at the beach house. The attorney also got Grace to reveal details of Jonathan’s sister’s death, revealed that he allegedly “suffered neither guilt nor grief” in reaction to his role in her death.

After leaving the courtroom, Haley whispers to Jonathan that it’s his own fault for not getting rid of the murder weapon – meaning that Jonathan was indeed the one to kill Elena, and that Haley knew about it the whole time.

The next day, Jonathan kidnaps Henry. During a police chase, Jonathan pulls his car over on the side of a bridge and considers suicide. At that moment, he changes his mind when he sees Grace running towards him.

Jonathan is then handcuffed while Grace and Henry hop on a helicopter and head to safety.
