Anya Taylor-Joy Says 'Harry Potter' Actually Helped Her Learn English

Anya Taylor Joy has opened up in a brand new interview about how “Harry Potter” helped her to learn English when she was a young girl.

The 24-year-old Queen’s Gambit star, who was raised in Argentina until she was six, revealed that she refused to learn English for two years after moving to London, but it was her uncle who helped her out by bringing in the book series.

“I wanted to go home, and in my six, seven-year-old mentality I thought my parents would have to take me back if I didn’t speak the language,” she shared with NME. “My uncle would sit me down with the Harry Potter books, so all my language when I was young was quite precocious because I was learning from these books.”

Anya added that she was “very well versed in spells from a very young age.”

In a previous appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Anya revealed that she actually kept her cool while working alongside Harry Melling in The Queen’s Gambit.

If you don’t know, Harry starred as Dudley in the movie franchise. Here’s what he said about starring in the movies…

“I timed it correctly, which is not in the first 10 minutes, but not exceeding 10 minutes,” she shared on the show. “You have to get it out of the way… [otherwise] it gets weird and then you kept something from them. So it’s better just to get it out of the way.”

The Queen’s Gambit is streaming now on Netflix.
