Capitol Police Chief Resigns Amid Backlash for Handling of Pro-Trump Capitol Siege

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund is resigning.

The move comes amid strong criticism of the department’s response to the Trump supporters who broke into the U.S. Capitol building, resulting in four dead, to protest the President’s election loss.

His resignation will go into effect on January 16, according to a spokesperson for the police via MSNBC.

Officers are “frustrated and demoralized” with how a lack of leadership undermined the response to those who stormed the building, according to a statement from Gus Papathanasiou, the union chairman. He blamed a failure and planning while praising officers for their work.

“We prioritized lives over property, leading people to safety. Not one Member of Congress or their staff was injured. Our officers did their jobs. Our leadership did not. Our Law Enforcement partners that assisted us were remarkable,” he said in the statement.

Sund previously called the officers actions “heroic” and denounced the chaos as “criminal riotous behavior.”

A key member of Trump‘s cabinet also just resigned.
