While fans use the opportunity to promote their favorite Janet moments, the significance of the day – Super Bowl Sunday – is intentional.

The now annual social media “holiday” is meant to uplift the superstar after her controversial nipple-baring 2004 performance alongside Justin Timberlake, which reportedly caused her to be largely sabotaged by Les Moonves and other execs in a reported years-long vendetta that caused her career to suffer.

“Executives from Viacom — the parent company of both CBS and MTV — blacklisted Jackson, forbidding any of its properties, including its long list of radio affiliates, from giving her exposure,” Rolling Stone reported years ago. The same punishment did not apply to Justin, who went on to have his own Super Bowl show years later.

“You can’t erase history, no matter how hard you try. Happy #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay, it’s all for her,” one fan wrote.

“We love you @JanetJackson we salute you & thank you for your contribution to the music& entertainment industry for 47 years in total. You are deserving of all this love bestowed upon you not just today but everyday #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay,” another fan wrote.

The social media movement started after filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry started the hashtag years ago.

“We should do a #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay this Sunday,” he offered back in 2018. And it’s been a pop culture trend ever since!

Janet Jackson recently gave a rare glimpse into life as a mother.
