'This Is Us' Director Talks About Who's in the Car at End of Latest Episode (Spoilers)

We were treated to another flash forward scene during the latest episode of This Is Us and the episode ended with a giant cliffhanger. Who is in the car?!

Spoilers will be discussed in this post, so if you don’t want to find out what happened, stop reading right now.

In the flash forward scenes that we’ve seen so far, we’ve learned that Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is on her death bed and Jack’s brother Nicky is by her side. We know that Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) are still going strong and we’ve seen their adult daughter Tess. Kevin (Justin Hartley) was at the house with his twins, who were just born in last week’s episode, and Toby (Chris Sullivan) showed up to the house without his wedding ring and Kate (Chrissy Metz) has been no where to be seen.

During the episode that aired on February 23, Randall and Beth’s daughters Deja and Annie drive up to the house together and after they arrive, they are greeted outside by Randall and Tess.

After seeing his three daughters together again as adult women, Randall and Deja, who is secretly pregnant, share a moment together and see another car pull up.

So, who is in that car that pulled up? We don’t know yet. Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel on the show, directed the latest episode and opened up about that scene.

Randall on This Is Us

“I can tell you I know who is in the car and that there is probably more than one person in the car. And people will be surprised with who exactly is in that car. That’s all I can say about that part of the scene,” Jon told TheWrap. “The other part I can say is seeing those three girls at the end from Randall’s point of view, standing beside each other, is that moment for Randall and Randall’s younger self. … As much as that’s a flash-forward to give us a hint about the future, it’s the payoff from that setup at Dairy Queen about Randall wanting that big family, that full family that he remembers growing up with.”

Jon added, “When everything was good at the Pearson house before Jack dies, the five of them, the adventures they went on, the Thanksgiving that Randall cherishes so much — all of those moments. He can finally see his life has paid off in that way with these three beautiful women that I think were perfect clones of our younger versions of Annie, Deja and Tess.”

Jon was also asked where Miguel is in the flash-forward scene because Nicky is the one by Rebecca’s side.

When asked if he knows the answer, Jon said, “Yes and no. There are literally two answers to that question that I can’t give, that really, the answers are even confusing to me. They don’t tell all of us actors everything. Actors have really big mouths; we’re talking to the press all the time. So I don’t think [series creator] Dan Fogelman and the writers will trust us with all the information.”

The show’s executive producer Julia Brownell told EW about the white car, “I will say I think you’ll get a little bit more information, at least by the end of the season of who might be in that car. And I think it potentially might be more than one person.”
