Who Won 'The Bachelor' 2021? Matt James Picks [Spoiler] - Finale Recap

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading if you don’t want to know what happened on The Bachelor season finale!

The season finale of Matt James‘ season of The Bachelor just aired and there were so many twists and turns.

We went into the finale with two women remaining – Michelle and Rachael. At the beginning of the episode, both of the women visited with Matt and his mom and brother. Things seemed to be going well during both dates, but things changed when Matt had a talk with his mom that put some doubt into his mind.

Matt‘s mom talked about her own experience with love and mentioned that love can always fade, and that made him doubt that he could see a future with either of the remaining women.

Later on, Matt had his final dates with Michelle and Rachael.

During Matt‘s date with Michelle, she surprised him by presenting him with custom-made basketball jerseys that said Mr. James and Mrs. James on them as a way to look forward to the future.

This put too many doubts into Matt‘s mind and he told her that he couldn’t see a future with her. He broke up with her on the spot.

After leaving Michelle‘s hotel room, Matt had a conversation with host Chris Harrison and told him that he needed time to think things over.

Rachel‘s date with Matt was supposed to be the next day and she was getting ready to see him, but then Chris showed up at her door and informed her the date was canceled. She wasn’t told if it was going to be rescheduled or not.

Instead of going on the date with Rachael, we saw that Matt met with jewelry designer Neil Lane and he picked out an engagement ring to possibly use to propose to her.

So, did he propose?

After canceling the date, Matt sent a note to Rachael and told her to meet him at the lake, where a classic The Bachelor proposal set-up was in place.

Matt told Chris that he wasn’t sure what he would do until he saw Rachael walk up to the site and they had a moment to talk, but he had the ring in his pocket just in case.

Matt told Rachael that the “easy thing” would be to propose to her, but he’s seen what rushing into a proposal has done in his family. He said it’s not what he wanted for them and he could not propose to her, but that he wasn’t going to break up with her.

“I want to leave here with you and I want to commit to you,” Matt said. “The truth is that I love you… I see you as my wife and I see you as the mother of my kids. I just want to make sure my love is enough for you.”

So, there was no proposal, but they ended the season together. We’ll have to wait and see what happens during the After the Final Rose special though… especially after everything that has happened in recent weeks.
