Brooke Shields Reveals She Had Two Surgeries & Three Blood Transfusions After Breaking Her Femur

Brooke Shields gives a thumbs up while being spotted out on her crutches in New York City earlier this month.

The 55-year-old actress revealed that she had broken her femur in a freak accident, and in a new interview with People, opened up about all the details and also admitted she feared she’d never walk again.

“It felt like it was all in slow motion. And then I just started screaming,” she said of the accident that happened during a workout at a private gym in January, where she fell off a balance board, flew up in the air and landed with such force that she broke her right femur.

“Sounds came out that I’ve never heard before,” she says, adding that she was double checking everything because she was “so afraid I was paralyzed.”

After her accident, Brooke actually needed two surgeries to insert pins “one from the top of my hip down, and another across into the hip socket.”

However, that first pin popped out and she need another to add five rods and a metal plate to anchor it all in place.

But Brooke’s plight didn’t end there. After her surgeries to repair her femur, she returned home only to develop a Staph infection.

The infection required her to return for emergency surgery on the IV site where she’d had three blood transfusions.

“At first they [the physicians] feared it might be MRSA [a type of bacteria resistant to antibiotics],” Brooke recalls. “Thank God it wasn’t. If it had been, my doctor said it would have been a race against time. That’s how you can become septic. It seemed unthinkable.”

During her recovery, Brooke revealed that she had some familiar and friendly faces to lean on.
