Here's How Chyler Leigh Filmed Her 'Grey's Anatomy' Return Without Joining the Cast On Set

Chyler Leigh‘s return to Grey’s Anatomy was announced last week and she had another special guest star alongside her during the latest episode.

Fans were shocked when they saw who showed up on Meredith Grey’s beach during the April 1 episode and we have some interesting details about how the scenes were filmed.

Chyler wasn’t able to make it to the set with Ellen Pompeo and the other special guest star, so they had to figure out how to film the scenes separately.

Eric Dane, who was the other special guest star on the episode, talked about the use of green screen for the episode.

“Chyler was in Vancouver [filming Supergirl]. So we had to work some magic,” he told THR. “Chyler could get here but then she couldn’t get back to Canada. There was some green screen. There was a lot of me and Ellen.”

He added, “I’m honestly bummed you even asked me that because I wanted to sell the myths of us actually being on screen together in person. But don’t take it personally. It’s OK, you’re doing your job. But Ellen and I see each other every now and again, Justin [Chambers] and I see each other every now and again. I spent so much of my life with these guys. When you see them again, it’s not a big, ‘Oh my God, what have you done?’ It’s like, nobody skips a beat. It’s just, everything kind of fit. It fit then; it still fits.”
