Bridgerton's Rege-Jean Page Explains Why He's Leaving the Show After One Season

Rege-Jean Page is opening up about his decision to leave Bridgerton and why he only stayed with the hit Netflix show for one season.

The 31-year-old actor played Simon Basset, aka the Duke of Hastings, in season one of Bridgerton and his character fell in love with Phoebe Dynevor‘s Daphne Bridgerton.

Each season of Bridgerton will focus on a different Bridgerton sibling’s journey to finding love and season two will revolve around Jonathan Bailey‘s Anthony.

Rege explained in a new interview why he decided to only do one season of the show.

The actor says that he was pitched the show as a one-season arc and he agreed to play Simon because he wouldn’t be committing to multiple seasons.

“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year,” Rege told Variety. “[I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

He added about the show essentially being an anthology series, “One of the things that is different about this [romance] genre is that the audience knows the arc completes. They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we’re going to come out and we’re going to have the marriage and the baby.”

Rege also discussed his departure in an Instagram post.

“The ride of a life time,” he captioned the above photo. “It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be your Duke. Joining this family – not just on screen, but off screen too. Our incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans – it’s all been beyond anything I could have imagined. The love is real and will just keep growing.”
