'Mad Max Fury Road' Prequel 'Furiosa' Set To Be Biggest Australian Movie To Date

Furiosa is bringing a lot of jobs to Australia, and making it the biggest movie ever made in the country.

Announced today (April 19) by New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian, the prequel film, she says, will start shooting in 2022, bring at least $350M AUD into the local economy and create 850 new jobs.

Cast member Chris Hemsworth was in attendance at the press conference alongside director George Miller and shared that working on the film will be “the biggest pinch-myself moment, because I’ve grown up watching it [‘Mad Max’] and it’s so iconic.”

He added that joining the franchise is “a huge honor. A lot of pressure, but exciting pressure that is certainly motivating.”

Many plot details about the movie are still under wraps, including Chris‘s role and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II‘s role as well.

Anya Taylor-Joy will portray the younger version of Furiosa in the movie, which was played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.

George did say that the prequel movie’s timeline will be spread out over years.

“Whereas Fury Road essentially happened over three days and two nights, this happens over many years,” he shared. ”You try to make films that are uniquely familiar…This will be familiar to those people who know Mad Max, and in particular Fury Road, but also it will be unique.”
