Derek Chauvin Found Guilty of Murder of George Floyd

Derek Chauvin has been found guilty in the trial following the death of George Floyd, which sparked outrage and Black Lives Matter protests all over the globe.

The jury returned their verdict on Tuesday (April 20), just under a year after George Floyd‘s death in May of 2020.

Derek was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The jury ruled that he was guilty of those charges in court.

The jury, made up of five men and seven women, deliberated for four hours Monday afternoon (April 19) and resumed on Tuesday morning (April 20), according to the court. They concluded their deliberations shortly after 3 p.m. ET. In total, they deliberated for more than 10 hours over the two day period.

Sentencing will take place in eight weeks. He faces up to 40 years in prison.

Derek arrived for the sentencing at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, Minn. with his attorney Eric Nelson, via CNN.

Footage of George Floyd‘s death went viral in 2020, where Derek could be seen placing his knee on George‘s neck as he said “I can’t breathe.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will deliver a public statement following the announcement, at around 5:30 p.m. local time, his office told the press. President Joe Biden is also expected to make a statement.
