Twitter Reacts to Anthony Hopkins Winning Best Actor Over Chadwick Boseman at Oscars 2021
People are shocked by what just happened during the Best Actor category at the 2021 Oscars.
The producers of the show switched up the order of the awards and had Best Picture as the third-to-last award of the night instead of the final award. Instead, Best Actor was the final award and everyone assumed they were holding the moment to end the evening with a Chadwick Boseman tribute.
Well, Chadwick didn’t win the award… Anthony Hopkins did.
Hopkins, who was not at the event, picked up his second Best Actor win for his work in the movie The Father. Presenter Joaquin Phoenix then accepted the award on his behalf and the show ended right there, incredibly anticlimactically.
Fans on Twitter are not happy with what happened and are calling out the producers for ending the show with this moment.

Wait, did the Academy hold Best Actor until the end because they assumed Chadwick Boseman would posthumously (and rightly) win and then he didn't, so they're like "WELP, good night!"#Oscars

Is someone going to wake Anthony Hopkins up and tell him what happened?

everything about that was a bummer. #Oscars fucked up big time not saving Best Picture for last, Boseman doesn’t get the tribute he deserves, and Hopkins gets a “what the fuck just happened?” moment for the single best performance of his entire career.

What a wildly anticlimactic way to end the least exciting Oscars ever? What just happened

I don't want to necessarily get caught up in worst #Oscars ever hyperbole, but SO many bad producing decisions tonight. And that ending-on-Best-Actor-instead-of-Best-Picture gamble was the punctuation mark on an evening gone awry.

And eventually Best Actor went to oh… lets say… Moe.

Yeah the “let’s put Best Actor last so, obviously, we can celebrate the life of Chadwick Boseman” really backfired

Welp, I gasped. Shocking and deeply anticlimactic at the same time! I mean, Anthony Hopkins is terrific in The Father, but that… wow, I have to think that isn't what producers had in mind when they put Best Actor last! #Oscars

Every single indication felt like they moved around the categories so that Chadwick Boseman would win best actor at the very end of the show. And then Anthony Hopkins wins, doesn’t give a speech, and they roll credits. This is MAXIMUM chaotic energy

Chadwick Boseman best actor of our hearts.
