It was a historic night at the 2021 Academy Awards!

A lot of firsts took place during the 93rd Oscars, which aired on Sunday night (April 25).

The 2021 Oscars already had historic nominations, with Steve Yeun becoming the first-ever East Asian American actor to be nominated for Best Actor, Riz Ahmed was the first Muslim actor nominated for Best Actor, and Chloe Zhao becoming the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Director. This year’s ceremony also marked the first time two women were nominated for Best Director – Chloe for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to ever win Best Director for Nomadland, and the second woman in history to win the award. The first woman winner was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker back in 2008.

At the age of 83, Anthony Hopkins becomes the oldest actor to win an Oscar in one of the acting categories. Tonight, he won Best Actor for his role in The Father.

Glenn Close is the most nominated actor to never win an Oscar. She has been nominated for eight Oscars across the course of her 40+ year movie career. The late Peter O’Toole also had eight Oscar nominations, but he did receive a non-competitive honorary Oscar in 2003.
