Olivia Rodrigo Talks The Success of 'Driver's License': 'I Thought I Was Never Going To Write A Song As Good As That Again'

Olivia Rodrigo is featured on the new digital cover of Elle magazine, and opening up about her life in music.

The 18-year-old actress and musician shared her thoughts on growing up on Disney Channel, having her love life dissected by fans on social media and how she appreciated songwriting even more once her family signed her up for piano lessons.

“It’s truly any songwriter’s dream,” Olivia admits about having fans analyze her love life from everything she posts online.

She adds that “there’ssomething so powerful in being vulnerable and open, like, ‘This is my life, and I’m f***ing sad.’ Or, ‘I’m insecure.’ That’s what makes songwriting so special.”

Check out what else Olivia shared below:

On not being a fan of piano lessons at first: “Oh my God, I hated it. I’d literally cry before every lesson,” she shared. However, after taking piano lessons, she says that “I realized that songwriting was something that people do, and it’s a craft.”

On having an identity crisis at 14: “It’s a multicamera sitcom, so literally every set is within a yard of each other,” she recalled of the Bizaardvark set and studio. “You just walk to the different sets.” As she turned 14, she experienced what she called “an identity crisis on steroids” and struggled with questions that every early adolescent confronts: “Who the f*** am I? Who cares about me? How do I treat people?” and the unique pressures of being in a “room with adults being like, ‘So, what’s your brand?’”

On what her brand really is: “I just want to be effortless, I guess. Whether it’s in my fashion or my songs or my social media, I want to just be like, ‘Yo, this is me. And I’m sometimes weird as f***, and I’m sometimes polished and put together.’ I think that’s the antithesis of a brand.”

On the success of “Driver’s License”: “I thought I was going to be really in my head, like, ‘I’m never going to write a song as good as that again’…This song has given me a lot of confidence in my voice. I think songwriting has really helped me home in on what I like about myself and my art.”
