'This Is Us’ Season 5 Finale Shocker: An Unexpected Wedding & Surprising Breakups

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading this post if you don’t want to know what happened on the This Is Us season finale!

There were some shocks during the season finale of This Is Us and we’re completely shook by everything that happened.

Leading up to the final episode of the fifth season, Justin Hartley’s character Kevin was set to marry Madison (Caitlin Thompson), the mother of his twins.

Throughout the last few episodes, we’ve seen him reunite with some of his exes and it has led to questions about his future with Madison. Would he stay with her or seek out one of his former loves?

So, what happened at the wedding?

Well, Kevin’s wedding didn’t happen and he and Madison broke up. In the hours leading up to their “I do’s,” Madison went to Kevin and asked him if he really loved her. He wasn’t able to say yes and she decided to end things with him. After the wedding was called off, Kevin’s mom Rebecca (Mandy Moore) asked him to stay busy by building her the house that her late husband Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) was going to build. This is the same house we’ve seen in some flash forward scenes.

At the wedding, we also saw that Toby (Chris Sullivan) got a new job, but it would require that he spend three days a week in San Francisco. Kate (Chrissy Metz) decided to quit her job so that Toby could pursue his career and she could stay home with the kids. When Kate calls her boss Phillip (Chris Geere) to resign, he says he won’t accept it. Kate tells Toby to take his job and that she’s going to keep hers as well.

The last few minutes of the episode provided a flash forward to when the Big Three are 45-years-old. We see that they are at a wedding and we learn that Kate is getting married… to Phillip!

Previous flash forwards have shown that Toby was missing and now we know that Kate has officially moved on from her marriage. It’s still unclear what happened to Toby.

Madison, who was Kate’s best friend before she ever became romantically involved with Kevin, was seen helping Kate get ready for the wedding. She and Kevin are on good terms and shared a cute moment together.
