'This Is Us' Showrunner Dan Fogelman Teases What's Ahead For The Pearson's In Final Season

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman is sharing a few hints about the upcoming season of the hit NBC series, following the season five finale which delivered a few major surprises.

In a new interview, the showrunner is revealing what’s next for the Pearson family in the final season which was announced earlier this month.

“The show has always been challenging with the place and time and we always knew that season six would be ambitious in terms of the way it jumps time, and even more ambitious than other seasons,” Dan shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

Dan went on saying that the final season will “live heavily” in the time period of Kate’s second wedding, which was revealed in the season five finale, and in the period 10 to 15 years down the line, when the family has gathered by Rebecca’s bedside.

He also notes that all the questions fans have about the future of the Pearson family will be answered.

“All of those timelines are going to be brought to completion and explained. There will be no looming questions when we get though the end of next season. Everything will be resolved.”

He was then careful to add, “You can’t always claim that 100 percent of your audience is going to like every single decision you make for the characters, but I don’t think anything will be left on the table.”

Chrissy Metz and Chris O'Sullivan as Kate and Toby on This Is Us

As far as Kate and Toby go, the finale revealed that they do get divorced and she ends up with Phillip, played by Chris Geere.

The reveal of Kate’s second wedding has been “a plot point we’ve known was coming for quite some time,” he says. “We’ve hinted many times in the deeper future that something was amiss between [Kate] and [Toby]; it’s been part of our plan all along…[That journey between Kate and Toby's divorce] is something we haven’t really done on this show yet and these two actors are going to have some really meaty stuff to dig into next year. Like everything on this show, I think we’re going to be able to find something difficult and find something beautiful inside.”

Chrissy Metz told Entertainment Weekly of the impending divorce, “When we get into relationships, we have high, high hopes. We want to make it work and we have the best intentions. And what I think is really important in life, even outside of acting, is that if you love somebody, you want them to be happy. If you love them, let them go. It’s one of those things where they both helped each other come into who they’re supposed to be for that next chapter. It didn’t mean that they were supposed to be together.”

“It’s tricky because, of course, we love the relationship so much, and they both have been through a lot in their lives, and Toby is such a great guy, and Kate has had so much hardship, personally, trying to come into her own. And sometimes people are just ushering other people to those places. Of course it’d be really sweet if they stayed together, but I also think what’s more beautiful is that you come to a resolve in that — my ex-husband, I care about him deeply, but I just know that I was not going to make him happy, and we just weren’t the fit we thought we were initially. People grow together or they grow apart; it’s not a bad thing. It’s worse to stay in a relationship that you’re absolutely miserable in, or that your needs aren’t being met from either side.”
