Senate Republicans Block Bill to Investigate Pro-Trump U.S. Capitol Insurrection That Left 5 Dead

Senate Republicans are putting a stop to a bill.

The bill in question would have created an independent commission to investigate the deadly Trump supporter-led insurrection on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol. It was blocked in a 54-35 vote on Friday (May 28) by nearly all GOP senators.

The bill failed to meet the threshold needed to overcome a filibuster. Six Republicans voted to advance the proposal: Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rob Portman of Ohio, Mitt Romney of Utah and Ben Sasse of Nebraska, CNBC reported.

The vote will likely result in putting an end to a proposed 10-person panel to understand the events that led to the violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol. Five people died in the takeover, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, whose mother met with some Republican senators and urged them to support the commission.

“Out of fear or fealty to Donald Trump, the Republican minority just prevented the American people from getting the full truth about Jan. 6,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement after the vote.

“I’ll continue to support the real, serious work of our criminal justice system and our own Senate committees. And I’ll continue to urge my colleagues to oppose this extraneous layer when the time comes for the Senate to vote,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said prior to the vote, discouraging senators to vote for the bill.

“I can’t imagine anyone voting against the establishment of a commission on the greatest assault since the Civil War on the Capitol,” President Joe Biden said before the vote was taken.

It was recently revealed that Trump‘s extension of this service is costing thousands for taxpayers.
