'In the Heights' Director Explains the 'Hamilton' Easter Egg You Might Have Missed

There’s a quick moment in the movie In the Heights that pays tribute to creator Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s other hit musical, Hamilton.

If you aren’t a mega-fan of Hamilton, you most likely missed the moment because it only lasted for a few seconds and featured an instrumental version of a song from the musical.

Jon M. Chu, the director of the In the Heights movie, is opening up about the fun Easter Egg and how it was all Lin-Manuel‘s idea.

The moment happens around 30 minutes into the movie when Nina’s dad Kevin Rosario (Jimmy Smits) is calling the Standford admissions office to convince them to let him pay for her overdue tuition. While he’s on hold, the music that plays over the phone is the “Da da da dat da” phrase from “You’ll Be Back.”

Chu told The Wrap, “That was indeed a Lin idea, and we wanted to make it a Muzak version. It’s all part of the ‘Lin-ematic Universe.’”
