Dutch Princess Catharina-Amalia Is Making Major History In Her Country - Find Out How

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands has made history in a shocking way.

The 17-year-old future queen, the first born daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, has chosen to waive her annual income that would come to her on her 18th birthday.

It was first reported earlier this year that Amalia would have received 111,000 euros (the equivalent of about $130,000) in 2021. The allowance will go to pay for her income, operations and personnel expenses.

In 2022, that allowance amount will increase to 1.5 million euros, when she will also be the Advisory Division of the Council of State of the Netherlands.

However, Amalia is waiving it all.

She penned a letter to the Prime Minister of the Netherlands and revealed her choice of waiving her right to receive the money, saying she would feel “uncomfortable” getting the money.

She expressed that she did not want to have that money until she has proper royal duties.

“On 7 December 2021, I will be 18 and, according to the law, receive an allowance,” Amalia wrote in the letter published by the Dutch public broadcaster, NOS.

“I find that uncomfortable as long as I do not do anything for it in return, and while other students have a much tougher time of it, particularly in this period of coronavirus.”

This marks the first time ever that a member of the Dutch royal family has waived their rights to a tax-free salary.
