Boris Johnson Presses Pause & Delays UK Cinemas Re-Opening Amid Rising COVID-19 Strain Infections

England’s reopening phase has been put on hold.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pressed the pause button as the country’s cinemas began to re-open amid the coronavirus pandemic, and they now must continue to operate at a reduced capacity.

According to Deadline, the UK government has been hinting at the delay for days now, as the strain identified as the Delta strain that was first identified in India, became more dominant and hospitalizations continued to rise.

The re-opening of cinemas to full capacity was expected to hit on June 21, and would have removed “all legal limits on social contact.”

Now, they will have to wait at least another four weeks for full houses.

“I’m confident we will not need more than four weeks and we will not need to go beyond July 19. It’s unmistakably clear the vaccines are working and the sheer scale of the vaccine rollout has made our position incomparably better than in previous waves,” Mr. Johnson stated in a press conference about the decision. “By being cautious now we have the chance to save many thousands of lives by vaccinating millions more people.”

As of Monday, June 14, there were 7,742 new cases of COVID-19, with three deaths within 28 days of a positive test. The seven-day average for cases was up 46% compared with the previous seven days.
