Tobey Maguire has landed the lead role in The Crusaders, a drama about the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.

The former Spiderman would play Jack Greenberg, an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school, reports Variety. Tobey’s character would be joined by NAACP Legal Defense Fund head and future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to win a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in American schools illegal.

In Brown v. Board of Ed., the courts declared that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” and that established separate public schools for black and white students denied black children equal educational opportunities. The landmark case paved the way for integration and the civil rights movement.

Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer have a casual dinner at Madeo in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

When leaving the restaurant, the Spiderman star became enraged with the paparazzi when they kept flashing photos in his face.

Tobey, 33, can be seen next in Brothers, where a young man comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan. He stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, with Natalie Portman also co-starring.

Tobey Maguire and his wife Jennifer Meyer take their daughter Ruby Sweetheart, 19 months, to Whole Foods in West Hollywood, Calif. on Sunday.

Last week, producer Laura Ziskin told theaters owners on Thursday that Spider-Man 4 is tentatively scheduled to arrive in May of 2011. Although rumors have been circulating surrounding both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s return, they have made no commitments.

Ziskin said there was no finished screenplay, but that she and Sony Pictures were hopeful Spider-Man 4 could be ready in three years’ time.

Tobey Maguire and his jewelry designer wife Jennifer Meyer take their daughter Ruby Sweetheart, 19 months, to a playground in Beverly Hills on Saturday.

Tobey is part of the NBA Entertainment League and will compete in one of its 16 teams, which enter their 12th season in November.

“I’ve seen guys like Frankie Muniz, who couldn’t shoot a lick, drop 27 points sometimes because he learned how to shoot three pointers,” said league inventor and “commissioner” Shane Duffy. “Guys like [Leo] DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have hired coaches in-house. These guys want to do better. They don’t want to embarrass themselves.”

Soccer star David Beckham gets in some father-son bonding time with his oldest son, Brooklyn, 9, during Game Three of the 2008 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics on Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The Lakers beat the Celtics 87-81.

Tobey Maguire and his wife, Jennifer Meyer, are expecting their second child later this year, reports In Touch.

Jen is due in early October and the couple is hoping it’s a boy!

“Jen and Tobey are over-the-moon happy,” a friend of the couple reveals. “Since they already have a daughter, they would love a little boy, but of course they would be just as thrilled with another daughter.”

Tobey, 32, and Jen, 31, already have a daughter, Ruby Sweetheart, 17 months.

The couple is in the process of building their dream home for their expanding family on a recently purchased lot in Brentwood that cost nearly $10 million!

“They want at least three kids, so they’ll need a big house,” their pal explains. “That’s why they’re building one now.”

The entire family was seen out and about last Saturday. Check out the possible baby bump!
