Nina Davuluri takes a dip in the Atlantic Ocean after being crowned Miss America 2014 on Monday morning (September 16) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

The 24-year-old New Yorker is the first Miss America winner of Indian descent and she has brushed off any racist remarks being made against her.

“I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity,” Nina told the AP (via USA Today). “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”

The 2014 Miss America was just crowned: congratulations to Miss New York Nina Davuluri!!!

Earlier in the evening, the judges announced the top fifteen finalists in the competition: Miss California Crystal Lee, Miss New York Nina Davuluri, Miss Oklahoma Kelsey Griswold, Miss Connecticut Kaitlyn Tarpey, Miss Georgia Carly Mathis, Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick, Miss Texas Ivana Hall, Miss Arkansas Amy Crain, Miss Missouri Shelby Ringdahl, Miss Kentucky Jenna Day, Miss Maryland Christina Denny, Miss Florida Myrrhanda Jones, Miss Wisconsin Paula Mae Kuiper and Miss Minnesota Rebecca Yeh.

The top five were Miss New York, Miss Oklahoma, Miss California, Miss Minnesota, and Miss Florida.

Each contestant took part in the swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview competitions before being crowned.
