Black Actors Win All Four Musical Acting Tony Awards in 2016

Daveed Diggs, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Renee Elise Goldsberry pose with their trophies in the press room at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

The four actors helped make history as this is the first year that black actors won all four of the musical acting awards!

Cynthia won her award for her work in The Color Purple while Daveed, Leslie, and Renee all star in the musical Hamilton. In addition, Hamilton won the award for Best Musical while The Color Purple won Best Revival of a Musical.

Here’s a fun fact: Renee actually starred in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple ten years ago!

Jake Gyllenhaal & Sean Hayes Sing 'A Whole New World' for Tony Awards Commercial Karaoke! (Video)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Sean Hayes belt out a song while doing karaoke during a commercial break at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

Host James Corden got celebs to sing during the breaks at the show and these two guys sang the Aladdin ballad “A Whole New World.”

Jake didn’t seem to know the lyrics that well and had to read the sheet for most of the song.

“During commercial breaks at The Tony’s tonight, the amazingly brilliant James Corden started up a Broadway-themed ‘commercial karaoke’. He asked for volunteers. Jake Gyllenhaal & I were happy to oblige with our rendition of ‘A Whole New World’ from ALADDIN. ‪#‎TheTonyAwards‬,” Sean captioned the below video on Facebook.

Barbra Streisand Returns to Tony Awards After 46 Years Away!

Barbra Streisand takes the stage to present the Best Musical award at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

The 74-year-old legendary actress and singer has not made an appearance at the Tony Awards since 1970, and she received a big welcome back from the audience when she arrived on stage!

At the end of the night, Barbra presented the Best Musical Tony Award to Hamilton, which was no surprise to lots of Broadway fans.

Saoirse Ronan & Sophie Okonedo Attend the Tony Awards 2016

Saoirse Ronan and Sophie Okonedo walk the red carpet at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

The ladies both star in the new production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Sophie was nominated for her work in the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play category.

Also in attendance were their co-stars Tavi Gevinson and Bill Camp, the latter of whom was nominated and brought along his wife Elizabeth Marvel.

'Hamilton' Cast Closes Tony Awards 2016 - Watch Now!

Tony winning star of Hamilton Renée Elise Goldsberry, as well as Jasmine Cephas Jones and Phillipa Soo, lead the cast in the closing number at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

The cast, who won Best Musical that evening, performed “The Greatest City in the World” as the credits began to roll on the big night. Hamilton took home 11 wins total, including three acting awards for Renee, Leslie Odom Jr, and Daveed Diggs. Congrats to the cast and crew on all the wins!

Leona Lewis Gets Ready for Broadway at Tony Awards 2016

Leona Lewis poses for photos on the red carpet at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

The 31-year-old singer will be making her Broadway debut this summer in the revival of Cats, singing the iconic song “Memory” in the role of Grizabella.

“The classic Cats, which I saw when I was 9, was just so breathtaking and mesmerizing,” Leona told People on the carpet. “So it’s staying true to the original but they’re injecting a bit of freshness into it which I’m really excited about.”

Also in attendance at the show was rapper Common, who took to the stage during the show.

Glenn Close & Andrew Rannells Spoof Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump at Tony Awards 2016 (Video)

Andrew Rannells and Glenn Close spoof Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in this funny on stage sketch at the 2016 Tony Awards held at the Beacon Theatre on Sunday (June 12) in New York City.

Andrew, who starred in The Book of Mormon years ago, spoofed Donald in The Book of Moron.

Meanwhile, Glenn portrayed Hillary in the A Chorus Line parody, A Clinton Line.

“I really need this job,” Glenn sang, mimicking the musical’s famous song “I Hope I Get It.” She continued, “Please God, I need this job. I’ve got to get this job.”
