Reese Witherspoon Explains Why Female Stories Are Important to Tell on Screen

Reese Witherspoon is speaking out about why it’s so important for female stories to be told on screen and why this led her to develop the new HBO series Big Little Lies.

The Oscar-winning actress was joined by co-stars Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz while promoting the show at the 2017 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Saturday morning (January 14) at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.

“I’m passionate because things have to change. We have to start seeing women as they really are in film. And not just in a movie theater with a tiny budget. We need to see real women’s experience whether it involves domestic violence, whether is involves sexual assault whether it involves motherhood or romance or infidelity or divorce,” Reese said (via Vanity Fair). “We need to see these things because we as human beings we learn from art and what can you do if you never see it reflected? I feel like I constantly see women of incredible talent playing wives and girlfriends in thankless parts, I just had enough.”

“It’s a unique pleasure to be able to come to other women with a piece of material I feel deeply proud of and excited to see their performance. These are the kinds of things that shift consciousness,” Reese added.

Shailene is wearing a Bottega Veneta outfit. Zoe is wearing an Alexander Wang dress and Sophia Webster shoes.

Tom Hardy Explains Why He Went to TV for FX's 'Taboo'

Tom Hardy‘s new series Taboo is getting ready to premiere on FX and he helped promote the show at the 2017 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Thursday (January 12) at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.

The 39-year-old actor was joined by co-stars Michael Kelly, Oona Chaplin, and David Hayman.

Tom explained that he decided to do the show because he wanted to play the character so badly. He opened up about trying to get creator Steven Knight to work on the show with him and dad Chips Hardy.

“We begged Steve to write our story because we had a concept and a basic treatment of the character, and Steve was busy and he had an offer informally, which was, ‘If you do Locke and Peaky Blinders, I would love to do your pilot and rewrite your title.’ That’s where it all started, and the three of us set about trying to create a new piece of work,” he said (via IGN).

Also in attendance at the TCA on Thursday were Legion‘s Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Katie Aselton, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, and Jeremie Harris, as well as Man Seeking Woman‘s Jay Baruchel, Katie Findlay, and Britt Lower.

Feud's Jessica Lange & Susan Sarandon Discuss How Hollywood Treats Older Actresses

Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are starring in the upcoming FX series Feud and they have opened up about the opportunities being given to older actresses and how not much has changed over the years.

The ladies were joined by co-stars Catherine Zeta Jones, Kiernan Shipka, and Alison Wright, along with series creator Ryan Murphy, at the 2017 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour on Thursday (January 12) at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.

“I don’t think it’s changed that much really to tell you the truth,” Jessica said (via Mashable). “It’s not necessarily a question of age or looks. I think it is who is interested in these stories. If the powers that be don’t find there is anything valuable or interesting in a story about a woman of a certain age, those films aren’t going to get made.”

“The line has been pushed,” Susan added. “But aging actors still have the same problems. I can guarantee that.”
