The 53-year-old entertainer made a surprise appearance at the event to present Rihanna, 31, and her fashion brand Fenty with the Urban Luxe Award.

Rihanna has credited Janet as one of her idols who inspired her to pursue a career in music.

“Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston—they were the people who motivated me to do this, who I idolized and looked up to, and said I want to be like them,” she previously told MTV almost a decade ago. “That started the dream, and it just went from there, and became a reality.”

The Oscar-winning actresses were joined at the event by Roberta Armani and Giorgio Armani, the niece-uncle duo behind the fashion label Armani.

Armani was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award at the annual awards show.

Fenty is nominated for the Urban Luxe Award alongside brands like Alyx, Marine Serre, Martine Rose, and Moncler Genius.
