Glenn Close accepts her award with help from her dog Pip at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 71-year-old actress won the award for Best Female Lead for her work in The Wife, but her dog won the spotlight during the speech!

Pip rolled around on stage while Glenn spoke. “I brought him up for this very reason,” she said. “It’s called ‘in the moment.’”

On winning the award, Glenn said, “It’s really, really only ever about the work, no matter what you’re wearing, no matter what red carpet you walk on. The fact that we get together and we tell these stories that really make a difference in the world — that is what we do.”

Regina Hall strikes a pose on the blue carpet as she steps out for the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 48-year-old Support the Girls actress looked so chic in a silk white and pink striped dress as she attended the event.

Other stars at the event included Madeline’s Madeline‘s Helena Howard, Leave No Trace‘s Thomasin McKenzie, Private Life‘s Kayli Carter, and A Bread Factory‘s Tyne Daly.

All five actresses were nominated for awards at the show.

Toni Collette flashes a smile on the blue carpet as she arrives at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 46-year-old actress looked pretty in a pink dress with cape-like sleeves and white heels as she stepped out for the show.

Also stepping out for the awards show was Toni‘s Hereditary co-star Alex Wolff.

During the awards show, Toni joined Jon Hamm on stage to present an award.

Toni was nominated at the awards show Best Female Lead for her role in Hereditary, but unfortunately lost to Glenn Close.

The full list of winners has been revealed for the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards!

The big winner of the show was the movie If Beale Street Could Talk, which picked up the awards for Best Feature, Best Director for Barry Jenkins, and Best Supporting Female for Regina King.

The cast of Suspiria – including Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton – received the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble.

Glenn Close and Richard E. Grant, who are both nominated for Oscars, picked up acting awards.

Riley Keough cozies up to husband Ben Smith-Petersen as they hit the blue carpet at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 29-year-old actress and woman sported a white and pink-floral print jumpsuit for the awards while her husband kept things simple in a black polo shirt and gray trousers for the awards show.

During the show, Riley took to the stage to present an award alongside Regina Hall.

The 48-year-old actress won the award for Best Supporting Female for her work in the movie If Beale Street Could Talk.

“I have not done a film in almost 10 years and to be here receiving this for such a beautiful piece of art…” Regina said during her speech.

Regina‘s last film before this one was 2010′s Our Family Wedding.

She added, “I am up here representing us. If Beale Street Could Talk is a beautiful piece of art that I am so lucky to be a part of. Thank you for celebrating us.”

Boots Riley accepts the award for Best First Feature at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 47-year-old filmmaker was joined on stage by cast members Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Steven Yeun, and more.

“There are real movements happening out there on the streets, direct action, where people are trying to change the way the world is and, rightly so, film is responding,” Boots said in his acceptance speech.

“This is a film that takes place in an office place and it’s the first one that I know that has class struggle in it even though class struggle is happening every day when you’re on your jobs and you’re seeing that happen. For some reason, we thought we had to edit that out of our stories,” he added.

“AYE. Our film @sorry2botheryou just won best first feature at @filmindependent awards & then @lakeithstanfield3 & I took this picture on the way to the porta potty,” Tessa captioned a pic on Instagram.
