Actress Sand Van Roy Protests With Tattoo on Red Carpet at Cannes Film Festival

Sand Van Roy is making a statement on the red carpet.

The 29-year-old French Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets actress, who sued Luc Besson for rape in 2018, appeared on the red carpet for the honoring of French actor Alain Delon and a screening of his film Monsieur Klein on Sunday (May 19) at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France.

The large temporary tattoo on her back read “Stop Violence Against Women” along with the #MeToo symbol.

Alain‘s recent public comments, in which he admitted to slapping women, caused the festival to feel pressure to withdraw the honorary Palme d’Or award. The decision was criticized by women’s rights advocates and resulted in petitions.

“The industry uses ‘art’ as an excuse to put itself above the law…being indifferent is being an accomplice,” Sand told Variety of her protest.

Salma Hayek also reportedly canceled her appearance at the festival because of the award ceremony, and her role in the #MeToo movement.
