Anne Hathaway Speaks About the Public's Perception of Her: It 'Has Nothing to Do With Me'

Anne Hathaway has gotten a lot of flack over the years about her 2013 Oscars win and the time prior, where articles like “Everyone Hates Anne Hathaway” were being published.

“I think it’s weird that it continues to be talked about a little bit,” Anne said. “I understand in the context of [her new movie Colossal, in which she plays an out-of-work blogger], why it should be brought up. But it comes up in every interview I do, just about. I am … not eager, but I am ready for the conversation to move to a place beyond it. I don’t have to contextualize all of my stories, all of my experiences through that time. I’m ready for it to be implied, not overtly stated.”

“It’s not that I’ve gotten a rhino skin to it, but I sort of see all of that for what it is. … How the world feels about me has nothing to do with me. How other people treat me has nothing to do with me,” Anne continued to Jezebel. “But if anything that anybody said resonated with me as something I’d like to work on for myself, I took it in like that. And to that extent, I feel like I got to shortcut a lot of my growth. To that extent, even though I wouldn’t have chosen to go through it, I still found a way to be grateful to it.”

Anne Hathaway: 'Hollywood Is Not a Place of Equality'

Anne Hathaway
strikes a pose on the cover of Elle magazine’s April 2017 issue, on newsstands March 21.

Here’s what the 34-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On her husband, Adam Shulman: “He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably. I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don’t need anybody. But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me.”

On the importance of focusing on paid parental leave in the U.S.: “I can’t believe we don’t already have it. When [my son] Johnny was a week old and I was holding him and I was in the ninth level of ecstasy, I just all of a sudden thought, ‘Mommy guilt is invented nonsense.’ We’re encouraged to judge each other, but we should be turning our focus to the people and institutions who should be supporting us and currently aren’t.”

On starring in Ocean’s Eight and working with a female-led cast: “Hollywood is not a place of equality. I don’t say that with anger or judgment; it’s a statistical fact. And even though I’ve been in some female-centric films, I’ve never been in a film like this. It just kind of makes you aware of the ways you sort of unconsciously change yourself to fit certain scenarios. It’s not better or worse or right or wrong, but there are certain things you understand about one another because of experiences you have in common…it’s probably easy for men to take that for granted. Just being on a set where I’m the one who possesses that ease is really something. It’s a nice alternative narrative.”

FYI: Anne is wearing a ’47 hat in the spread.

Anne Hathaway Answers If She Thinks 'Ocean's Eight' Will Receive Similar Attention as 'Ghostbusters' Reboot

Anne Hathaway stops by the farmer’s market to grab some fresh food on Sunday (March 12) in Hollywood.

Recently, the 34-year-old actress spoke about her upcoming movie Ocean’s Eight, which features a female core cast. Anne was asked if she believes Ocean’s Eight will receive similar attention to the female reboot of Ghostbusters, which was subject to criticism.

“When I’m a second or a third lead in a film — usually the first and second leads are men — my character doesn’t feel political. But when I’m No. 1 on the call sheet, it suddenly becomes a “woman’s story” and it’s a statement. That’s the moment that we’re in. In this movie there are eight women starring, so it may well attract that sort of attention,” Anne told Time‘s Motto. “But good luck to any person who tries to take on Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett because you’re not going to win.”
