Javicia Leslie as Batwoman - First Look Photos!

The first official photos of Javicia Leslie as the new Batwoman, aka Ryan Wilder, are finally here!

If you don’t know, Javicia is taking over the role from Ruby Rose, who left the role unexpectedly a few months ago. Find out why Ruby ultimately decided to exit the series.

Javicia said of collaborating with executive producer Caroline Dries and costume designer Maya Mani, “I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

Notable changes to the costume include a new cowl featuring natural, curly hair with red streaks, red gauntlets over the forearms, and shorter boots, as well as a redesign with new materials, featuring laser etching to create more visual depth and a stronger silhouette.

Ruby Rose Reveals COVID-19 Lockdown Played a Role in Leaving 'Batwoman'

Ruby Rose is speaking more about her decision to leave Batwoman after one season starring on The CW show.

During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, she was asked if her back injury contributed to the decision.

“That definitely made going back to work, you know, so quickly tricky. But they really accommodated trying to help me out the best they could, going back so early. Cause we wanted to obviously meet the, the release date of the show,” Ruby said.

“I think what played a bigger part was more, we got shut down early. We didn’t get to finish the first season, which is such a shame, especially for a first season show…and then we went into lockdown with COVID and thinking of in quarantine and locked down, there was a lot of thought and reflection and kind of everyone did it. You know, we all kind of thought about where we’re at… we were discussing the show and we had a conversation and, you know, I had a great time on Batwoman. I am so proud of what we achieved. We set out to achieve something pretty significant, you know, the first ever live action Batwoman and the first ever, you know, out gay superhero, her and Kate Kane. And I love that character and the whole experience, but we did have a discussion and we sort of mutually agreed that probably what was best for the show, um, at the time was they go in a different direction and I go in a different direction,” she continued.

She added, “It was tough cause it was sad cause we will love each other, but also it made sense for so many different reasons. And you know, I think at the end of the day, like, Oh, I’m really excited to watch season two. I think the show is great. I love the cast. I’m still in contact with everyone, but it was, it was a decision that we, we talked about, we discussed, we slept on. Um, but at the time with all that reflection, it just seemed like the right thing to do.”

A source spoke out on the rumored reason why Ruby Rose departed just after the announcement was made.

Meanwhile, we have photos of the brand new Batwoman on set and she looks amazing!

Ruby Rose Says Her Back Injury Contributed To Her Leaving 'Batwoman' Just as The Pandemic Started

Ruby Rose is speaking up again about her decision to leave Batwoman, which shocked many fans back in May.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 34-year-old actress explained that having surgery on her back, plus the pandemic led her to re-evaluate her decision to either remain or leave the series.

“Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough,” Ruby says. “But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery.
