Johnny Depp‘s new movie Black Mass hit theaters this weekend and is set to do great business at the box office, but James “Whitey” Bulger, the gangster he plays in the film, is not happy with the finished product.

“Johnny Depp might as well have been playing the Mad Hatter all over again as far as James Bulger is concerned,” Bulger‘s defense attorney Hank Brennan told People. “Hollywood greed is behind the rush to portray my client, and the movie missed the real scourge created in my client’s case, the real menace to Boston during that time and in other mob cases around the country – the federal government’s complicity in each and every one of those murders with the top echelon informant program.”

Bulger, now 86, is currently serving two life sentences in a Florida maximum security federal prison and he does not plan on watching the movie if he ever gets the chance.

“The movie missed the real story and instead made a cartoon mockery out of Jimmy Bulger,” Brennan added.

Sienna Miller‘s role in the highly anticipated film Black Mass was cut from the film, the director Scott Cooper confirmed to the Boston Globe.

“It came down to narrative choices,” Scott told the publication about the 33-year-old actress, adding that she was “fantastic” in her role as Catherine Greig, the girlfriend of Johnny Depp‘s character.

Catherine lived with Whitey Bulger (Depp) for 16 years and was sentenced to eight years in prison for helping him with his crimes.

The film is a true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.

Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, Joel Edgerton and more also star in the movie, which will be released in theaters on September 18.
