“We went into the project thinking I would be doing it hand-in-hand with him,” Bradley told NPR. “And so I only talked to him one time on the phone, and that was to hope to sort of soften any of the fears he had about what Hollywood would do to his story. And we had a great conversation, but little did I ever think that would be the last time I’d ever get to talk to him, and that I’d never get to meet him. So when he was horribly murdered, everything changed.”

Bradley Cooper Calls 'American Sniper' Role an 'Honor'

Bradley Cooper poses with his Silver Linings Playbook pal Robert De Niro at a special screening and reception for his new movie American Sniper on Thursday (December 18) at the Time Warner Center in New York City.

The 39-year-old actor was also joined by Taya Kyle, the widow of Chris Kyle, who Bradley portrays in the film.

“It was just an honor,” Bradley recently told People about playing him. “There’s something about how stoic he was, and it was all sort of in his eyes as a human being, how gentle he was, how complicated he was, and it was really sort of a practice in almost doing nothing and just sort of trusting that whatever’s going inside is going to read.”
