Naomi Osaka Wears Trayvon Martin Mask to U.S. Open

Naomi Osaka is powerfully speaking out – even without saying anything.

The 22-year-old tennis star entered Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open on Sunday (September 6) wearing a black face mask that read “Trayvon Martin,” drawing attention to the unarmed Black teenage who was murdered by a neighborhood watchman back in 2012.

Naomi has worn different masks bearing different names throughout the tennis tournament, and says she has one for all seven rounds if she continues to win.

“I remember Trayvon’s death clearly. I remember being a kid and just feeling scared, irreverent info but I actually didn’t wear hoodies for years cause I wanted to decrease the odds of ‘looking suspicious’. I know his death wasn’t the first, but for me it was the one that opened my eyes to what was going on,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I remember watching the events unfold on tv and wondering what was taking so long, why was justice not being served. To see the same things happening over and over still is sad. Things have to change,” she continued.

She also wore a mask bearing Breonna Taylor‘s name in round one, and a mask with Ahmaud Arbery‘s name as well afterward.

“I actually have seven [masks], and it’s quite sad that seven masks isn’t enough for the amount of names, so hopefully I’ll get to the finals and you can see all of them,” she said after the first win.

“None of these deaths had to happen. I just want everyone to know the names,” she told reporters.

There was a shocking disqualification at the U.S. Open over the weekend.

Beyonce Knowles Demands Justice for Breonna Taylor's Murder in a Letter to Attorney General

Beyonce wants justice for Breonna Taylor.

The 38-year-old Lemonade music icon posted a letter she wrote to the Office of the Attorney General Daniel Cameron in Kentucky on Sunday (June 14) amid global protests denouncing systemic racism and police brutality.

“It has now been over three months since members of the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) killed Breonna Taylor. Plainclothes officers with a ‘no-knock’ warrant forced their way into her apartment, where she was asleep and unarmed. Moments later, the officers fired over twenty shots into Breonna Taylor‘s home, striking her at least eight times. While ‘Breonna‘s Law’ passed in Louisville and federal legislation has been introduced that will ban no-knock warrants, these small steps in the right direction are painful reminders that there has still been no justice for Breonna Taylor or her family,” she wrote.

“Don’t let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy. With every death of a Black person at the hands of the police, there are two real tragedies: the death itself, and the inaction and delays that follow it. This is your chance to end that pattern. Take swift and decisive action in charging the officers. The next months cannot look like the last three.”

Breonna Taylor's Injuries Listed as 'None' in Nearly Blank Incident Report Released After Her Death

Police officers released a nearly blank incident report on Wednesday (June 10) following the death of Breonna Taylor, whose death along with George Floyd has sparked protests against police brutality and systemic racism across the globe.

If you didn’t know, Breonna was fatally shot at 26 in her own apartment by the police during a no-knock search, yet her injuries are listed as “none.”

The police report also checked “no” on the “forced entry” box on the form, even though crime scene photos and witness reports claim officers used a battering ram to force entry into the apartment where she was asleep with her boyfriend.

In the “notes/narrative” section, they wrote only “PIU investigation,” for Public Integrity Unit, which is responsible for “monitoring or conducting criminal investigations of department members including all officer-involved shootings and in-custody deaths.”

The document was printed by Theodore Eidem, a lieutenant in the department and commander of the Public Integrity Unit.

“This is unacceptable. Full stop. It’s issues like these that erode public confidence in Louisville’s police department, and its ability to do its job, and that’s why I’ve ordered an external top-to-bottom review of the department,” said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.

The four-page report, released nearly three months after her death, includes just the time, date, case number and victim’s name. It also identifies the officers involved as Sgt. Jon Mattingly, 47, Myles Cosgrove, 42, and Brett Hankison, 44.

They have been placed on administrative reassignment, but have not been charged, despite global protests to do so.

According to the mayor, the city cannot currently terminate the officers due to a stipulation that the officers cannot be fired before the investigation is complete.
