Brit Marling Says Harvey Weinstein Suggested They Shower Together

Brit Marling is opening up about her own experience with Harvey Weinstein, in which she was asked to take a shower with him in his hotel room.

The actress, who created and starred in the Netflix series The OA, opened up about her 2014 experience with Weinstein in an essay for The Atlantic.

“I, too, went to the meeting thinking that perhaps my entire life was about to change for the better,” she wrote in the piece. “I, too, was asked to meet him in a hotel bar. I, too, met a young, female assistant there who said the meeting had been moved upstairs to his suite because he was a very busy man. I, too, felt my guard go up but was calmed by the presence of another woman my age beside me. I, too, felt terror in the pit of my stomach when that young woman left the room and I was suddenly alone with him. I, too, was asked if I wanted a massage, champagne, strawberries. I, too, sat in that chair paralyzed by mounting fear when he suggested we shower together. What could I do? How not to offend this man, this gatekeeper, who could anoint or destroy me?”

“It was clear that there was only one direction he wanted this encounter to go in, and that was sex or some version of an erotic exchange,” she added. “I was able to gather myself together — a bundle of firing nerves, hands trembling, voice lost in my throat — and leave the room. I later sat in my hotel room alone and wept. I wept because I had gone up the elevator when I knew better. I wept because I had let him touch my shoulders. I wept because at other times in my life, under other circumstances, I had not been able to leave.”

Brit says that because she had already written other projects, she felt the freedom to leave the room without worrying about Weinstein trying to ruin her career.

“Consent is a function of power. You have to have a modicum of power to give it,” she wrote. “I think for me, I was able to leave Weinstein’s hotel room that day because I had entered as an actor but also as a writer/creator. Of those dual personas in me — actor and writer — it was the writer who stood up and walked out. Because the writer knew that even if this very powerful man never gave her a job in any of his films, even if he blacklisted her from other films, she could make her own work on her own terms and thus keep a roof over her head.”

Kate Mara & Lily Collins Discuss How Their Confidence Came With Age

Kate Mara and Lily Collins look so stunning in their latest feature for Glamour magazine’s April issue, on national newsstands March 14 and available now on Glamour.com.

When the actresses were asked to redefine beauty in 2017, they both opened up about how getting older has instilled a sense of confidence into how they view themselves. Here’s what they had to share with the mag:

Kate on why she feels more comfortable than ever in her 30s: “As I get older I feel much more confident now than I ever did when I was in my early 20s. People always say, ‘Oh, what I would give to be 20 again.’ That’s so unappealing to me. I don’t know if everyone feels that way. Because I just feel more confident. I think the more you get confident with your inner self, the more confident you feel about your outer in your day.”

Lily on why she didn’t always love her brows: “My mom always said the quirky things that make you different are what make you beautiful. But when you’re younger, they’re normally the things that make you insecure. For me, it was my eyebrows. They were overly thick and luscious. So I went to town and plucked them. When you get older, [you realize] the things that define your differences are beautiful.”

Also featured in the issue are Annalise Basso, Brit Marling, Halston Sage, Jenny Slate, Martha Hunt, Sabrina Carpenter, Tinashe, Yara Shahidi, Jen Atkin, and more.

The OA's Brit Marling Discusses Taking Criticism in Hollywood

Brit Marling takes the cover of Interview magazine’s March 2017 issue.

The 34-year-old The OA star was interviewed by Malcolm Gladwell for the mag – here’s what she shared:

On developing a thick skin over critique: “I think I do definitely have a toughness. And who knows where this sh*t comes from? I mean, look, somebody you admire saying something harsh about your work hurts me the way it hurts everybody else. But, for me, it just never goes very deep. It’s like someone taking a little pin and like pricking you. For better or worse, I have pretty sophisticated armor that makes me feel like the thing I’m most interested in is trying the bold thing I believe in and that that in and of itself is worth something, even if nobody gets it in the moment.”

On her connection to science fiction: “For me, fantasy and speculative science fiction are the genres that feel closest to how I feel about being alive. Like, when I feel the most invigorated by just even a walk down the block in twilight, when the street lamps are just coming on and there’s mist and some shadowy thing in silhouette in a window, I naturally invest all of those things with deep mythology and mystery and meaning. I think I need to believe in that version of reality because I get very scared when I don’t. I feel very alone when I don’t feel that.”

On staying in the moment: “For some reason, I have a very strange conception of time. I am constantly hovering at some overview, more macro. And what I like about acting is that you have to be super, super present in the moment. That’s not something that comes to me naturally. But if you take the long view on anything, nothing can really affect you or knock you down.”
