Amber Riley to Play Effie in 'Dreamgirls' on London's West End!

Amber Riley is set to play the role of Effie in an upcoming stage production of the musical Dreamgirls on London’s West End, according to the Daily Mail.

The 29-year-old actress, who starred on Glee and in NBC’s The Wiz Live, previously sang the show’s big number “And I Am Telling You” on the hit Fox series.

Effie is the role that won Jennifer Hudson an Oscar in 2007 and Jennifer Holliday a Tony Award in 1982.

Dreamgirls will start performances in November 2016 and it will be directed by Casey Nicholaw, who has helmed the Broadway productions of The Book of Mormon, Aladdin, and Something Rotten. Since the show has not been seen on Broadway since 1987, we hope it transfers to New York after the run in London!

The 34-year-old singer has been involved in the Broadway community for some time now and even released an album of musical theater covers called Stages. This will be his first time appearing on the Great White Way though!

“For a first time doing it, I wanted it to be something that was a little less expected, and I wanted it to be a show and a character that forced me to get a little bit out of my comfort zone and do something that people haven’t seen before,” Josh told the New York Times. “To have the opportunity and freedom to take off the hat of ‘me,’ and to dive into a character, is something I think will be very freeing, and very fun.”

The musical is an adaptation of a 70-page section of the classic novel War and Peace. Josh will be playing the role of Pierre and has to play the piano and accordion throughout the show!
