Carey Mulligan Speaks Out About Jennifer Lawrence's Wage Inequality Essay

Carey Mulligan is the latest star to speak out about wage inequality in Hollywood.

The 30-year-old Suffragette actress opened up about Jennifer Lawrence‘s essay regarding the differences in pay between men and women.

“I think it’s a good thing for someone like Jennifer to speak out; it means an awful lot to women,” Carey told Deadline. “Sure, there’s been cynicism toward her speaking out and the fact that she makes a lot of money, but she is completely and selflessly rising above that. (The discrepancy) is inherently unfair and she has an enormous platform to speak out against it. Men in Hollywood look up to her because she is powerful. She’s using that platform to correct something that isn’t right. It’s a long overdue conversation and it’s admirable what she has done. This is an age-old issue that’s in every part of society.”

Carey Mulligan Says Pay Gap Talk Should Be About More Than Just Hollywood

Carey Mulligan is all smiles in her all-black outfit while speaking at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversation Series on Wednesday (November 18) at NYIT Auditorium in New York City.

The 30-year-old Suffragette actress attended an afternoon tea event the day before to celebrate her movie.

At the tea party, Carey weighed in on the pay gap conversation.

“It’s proven now, as opposed to just being a theory. We know that women are paid less,” Carey said. “Our producer on the film talks about when she applied to be a dishwasher at her local restaurant and it was advertised as 50 pence for men and 30 pence an hour for women, and that was only in the ‘60s or ‘70s.”

“It’s important that our conversation isn’t just about Hollywood. It shouldn’t be a self-serving thing; it should be used to have a wider conversation, because it’s the same in all industries,” Carey added. “If we’re going to talk about it, we should use it as a platform, as opposed to just try and fix it for ourselves.”

FYI: Carey is wearing a Mary Katrantzou dress at the tea event.
