Chris Rock's Oscars 2016 Opening Monologue Skewers Oscars So White Backlash (Video)

Chris Rock had a lot to say about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy during his opening monologue at the 2016 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 28) in Hollywood.

“Well, I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People Choice Awards. If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job,” the 51-year-old comedian started off the monologue. “This is the wildest, craziest Oscars to ever host. You have all this controversy… I though about quitting, but I realized they’re gonna have the Oscars anyway… The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart.”

Chris brought up the backlash that the Academy received when only white actors were nominated this year and questioned why people finally are lashing out this year.

“Why this Oscars? It’s the 88th Academy Awards, which means this whole ‘no black nominee things’ has happened at least 71 other times,” Chris said. “You have to figure it happened in the 50s, in the 60s… And black people did not protest. Why? Because we had real things to protest at the time. We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about best cinematography. When your grandmother’s swinging from a tree, you’re too busy to care about winning best documentary short.”

FYI: Chris is wearing a Burberry tuxedo, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Martin Katz cuff links.

Chris Rock Hasn't Planned His Oscars 2016 Monologue Yet

Chris Rock has not yet planned what he will be addressing in his monologue at the 2016 Oscars despite the show’s producer claiming he’d tackle the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

The 50-year-old comedian’s rep has responded to reports that Chris rewrote his speech after the nominations were announced.

“Regarding Reggie Hudlin‘s comments about Chris Rock‘s Oscar hosting duties, neither he nor anyone else speaks for Chris,” his rep told JustJared.com in a statement. “Chris has made no decisions about the content of the show. All will be revealed on February 28th. We will not comment further on this.”

Here is what Reggie originally said to ET: “Chris is hard at work. He and his writing staff locked themselves in a room. As things got a little provocative and exciting, he said, ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.’”

Chris Rock Will Still Host Oscars & His Monologue Will Address #OscarsSoWhite

Chris Rock will still host the 2016 Oscars despite calls for him to boycott the event, and his opening monologue will take on #OscarsSoWhite, Academy Awards producer Reginald Hudlin told Entertainment Tonight.

The 50-year-old actor is rewriting his script after figures like Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith announced they were boycotting the ceremony, Variety reports.

Chris is hard at work. He and his writing staff locked themselves in a room,” Reginald said. “As things got a little provocative and exciting, he said, ‘I’m throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.’”

Reginald added, “And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that. They’re excited about him doing that. They know that’s what we need. They know that’s what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want.”
