'Peter Pan Live' Ratings Strong, But Fall from 'Sound of Music'

The new NBC tradition of airing a live musical continued for the second year with Peter Pan Live and while the ratings were strong, they fall sharply from last year’s The Sound of Music Live.

The three-hour production pulled in a 5.9 rating, down from The Sound of Music‘s 10.9 rating. That means that 5.9% of all television equipped households in the country were tuned in during the show.

“We’re very pleased with the Peter Pan ratings and it was a great night for NBC. We won every hour, which hasn’t happened on Thursday with entertainment programming since a year ago,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said in a statement (via THR). “I’m proud to be part of a company that takes chances and creates big events, and that’s exactly what we’re going to continue to do. We didn’t expect to reach the same rating as The Sound of Music since that was the first live movie event of its kind in over 50 years. But the high wire act of Peter Pan was a joy for everyone involved and I take my hat off to Allison Williams, Christopher Walken, the entire company, and our incredible directors and producers for three months of the hardest work I’ve ever seen. I love these live events and we’re already working on putting the next one together.”

Allison Williams on 'Peter Pan Live': Don't Hate Watch It!

Tonight is the night and Allison Williams will be bringing Peter Pan Live to audiences around the country on NBC’s live special!

The musical is the follow up to last year’s smash hit, The Sound of Music Live, and the cast of this year’s show knows that the audience is very likely to hate watch.

“I will say this about last year: today’s audiences like to watch things cynically,” Allison told The Daily Beast. “And I’m on a show that’s cynical in tone so I’m no stranger to that.”

“Hatewatching is a thing,” she added. “It’s a whole way of watching something, and it’s not an audience that’s natural to a non-cynical performance. Peter Pan, you cannot watch cynically. If you do, you’re going to hate it, no question. It falls apart instantly.”

Also starring in the show will be Christopher Walken as Captain Hook, Kelli O’Hara as Mrs. Darling, and Christian Borle as Mr. Darling/Smee.

Christian Borle Cast in TWO Roles for NBC's 'Peter Pan Live'!

Christian Borle will be playing not one, but TWO roles in the upcoming Peter Pan Live production airing on NBC this holiday season.

The 40-year-old actor will be taking on the roles of Mr. Darling (the father of Wendy and boys) and Smee (Captain Hook’s assistant).

In the original Broadway production of the musical, the actor who played Mr. Darling also played Captain Hook, according to Deadline.

The role of Captain Hook in this version will be played by Christopher Walken while Girls actress Allison Williams will be playing Peter Pan.

You may recognize Christian from his work in NBC’s live production of The Sound of Music and his role on Smash. He is definitely familiar with the world of Peter Pan after starring in (and winning a Tony Award) the Broadway play Peter and the Starcatcher.
