Christopher McQuarrie Says WB Turned Down His 'Superman' Movie With Henry Cavill (Report)

Christopher McQuarrie is opening up about his Superman and Green Lantern films that he says Warner Bros. rejected.

The 51-year-old screenwriter recently took to Twitter to explain the situation to fans.

“Too complicated to explain,” Christopher wrote (via CBR). “It tied into the Superman movie that [Henry] Cavill and I were proposing. No takers. The studios have never cared for my original ideas. They prefer that I fix their broken ones.”

Besides the Superman pitch, Christoper said he also penned a Green Lantern proposal.

Christopher McQuarrie added that the discussions took place ahead of the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and that they were for a sequel to Man of Steel, though Warner Bros. chose not to go forward with his idea.

Tom Cruise & 'Mission Impossible: Fallout' Director Get Honored at Harold Lloyd Awards 2019!

Tom Cruise is all smiles as he poses alongside Christopher McQuarrie on the red carpet at the 2019 Lumiere Awards held at Warner Bros. Studios on Wednesday (January 30) in Burbank, Calif.

The 56-year-old actor was in attendance to help honor the 50-year-old Mission Impossible: Fallout director for achievement in filmmaking with the Harold Lloyd Award.

Tom and Christopher also accepted the trophy for Best Scene or Sequence, for Mission: Impossible — Fallout‘s final helicopter chase sequence.

“[Christopher] applies cutting edge technology beautifully,” Tom said during his speech (via THR). “Like Harold Lloyd, respects the audience … and understands that story is everything.”

“Our single greatest piece of technology is Tom Cruise,” Christopher continued. “I have an unfair advantage. Whatever we come up with, Tom’s response is ‘Yeah, I’ll do that. How are you going to shoot it?’ That sets in motion the development of new technology.”

Christopher McQuarrie – who helmed the last two films, Rogue Nation and Fallout – is also on board to write and direct the two new installments.

“Missions: Accepted#MissionImpossible,” Christopher tweeted.

The movies are expected to hit theaters in the summers of 2021 and 2022, which will avoid conflict with Tom‘s Top Gun: Maverick.

They’ll be shot back to back in order to maximize production schedules and ensure that the studio can release them in consecutive years, Variety reports.

Production would likely start this year!
