The Crown's Matt Smith Speaks Out About Claire Foy Pay Disparity Controversy

The Crown star Matt Smith is speaking out about the controversial pay disparity between himself and co-star Claire Foy, which producers apologized for in March.

Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly. I support her completely, and I am pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for that because that what’s needed to happen. Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind we need to strive to make this better, a more even playing field, for everyone involved — but not just in our industry, in all industries.”

It is still unclear at this time whether Netflix and producers provided additional compensation to Claire upon the revelation of the disparity.

Claire Foy Reacts to 'The Crown' Pay Gap Controversy

Claire Foy found herself at the center of a wage gap controversy where she was publicly outed as making less money as her co-star Matt Smith on Netflix’s The Crown, despite her having the starring role.

“I’m surprised because I’m at the center of it, and anything that I’m at the center of like that is very very odd, and feels very very out of ordinary,” Claire told Entertainment Weekly. “But I’m not [surprised about the interest in the story] in the sense that it was a female-led drama. I’m not surprised that people saw [the story] and went, ‘Oh, that’s a bit odd.’ But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it’s odd to find yourself at the center [of a story] that you didn’t particularly ask for.”

Producers have since apologized to Matt and Claire for being thrust into the spotlight over their salaries.

'The Crown' Producers Apologize to Claire Foy & Matt Smith Over Pay Disparity

Left Bank pictures, the company who produces Netflix’s The Crown, has issued a statement apologizing after a pay disparity between the stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith came to light.

“We want to apologize to both Claire Foy and to Matt Smith, brilliant actors and friends, who have found themselves at the centre of a media storm this week through no fault of their own. Claire and Matt are incredibly gifted actors who, along with the wider cast on The Crown have worked tirelessly to bring our characters to life with compassion and integrity,” Left Bank said in a statement (via Variety). “As the producers of The Crown, we at Left Bank Pictures are responsible for budgets and salaries; the actors are not aware of who gets what, and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues.”

Matt has especially been getting attention after it was revealed he was paid more than Claire, and a petition emerged trying to get him to donate his salary to Time’s Up.
