Kerry Washington Wasn't ABC's Original Choice to Play Olivia Pope on 'Scandal'

The cast and creative team of ABC’s Scandal sat down for an interview with THR amid their 100th episode celebration – and a big reveal was made.

Apparently, ABC wanted Connie Britton for the role, and Shonda Rhimes and others on the team fought for a black actress to star. The role obviously went to Kerry Washington, who has played the role since day one!

“Nothing felt more important than the sense of outsiderness. I didn’t know that there hadn’t been a drama series with a leading black woman for 37 years. When the show got picked up [to pilot], I got a phone call from somebody who said, ‘This would be the perfect show for Connie Britton.’ I said, ‘It would be, except Olivia Pope is black,’” Shonda told THR.

“The network was reading us their top choices, and it was Connie and all white women. I panicked. Somebody finally piped up, ‘We’re going to have to redo this list,’” Linda Lowy, the casting director, added. “We tested Kerry, Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose. It was Kerry from the moment I took her to meet Shonda.”

Meanwhile, Kerry added, “This would have been a great role for Connie Britton!”

Rashida Jones, Connie Britton, & Tracee Ellis Ross Discuss Combating Today's Beauty Standards

Rashida Jones, Connie Britton, and Tracee Ellis Ross take three separate covers for Good Housekeeping‘s May 2017 issues.

Here’s what the three stars had to share with the mag:

Rashida, on Hollywood’s tough standards for beauty: “I don’t like the idea that there is so much pressure on women to look a certain way in Hollywood. There are times when I feel myself buckling under it.”

Tracee, on the importance of inner beauty and self-love: “There are times I put on tons of makeup; there are times I don’t. The larger conversation is about the idea that we have to manipulate ourselves to be lovable and worthy. My life has worth because of who I am as a human being, not because I am an object of desire. I’d love to be in a delicious, romantic relationship, but it is not the point of how I choose to look or feel beautiful.”

Connie, on how the stigma of not being sexy over 40 is fake news: “People tell me the 50s are the best time – I’m ready! That whole stigma of being over 40 and not being sexy anymore is fake news. We’re more vibrant because we have experience, we know our bodies. I have a friend who says that you always want to make sure it’s your life that you’re living – it’s a constant mantra.”

“She’s really dead. I’m sorry, but I gotta tell it like it is. She’s really dead,” Connie told host Stephen Colbert. “But, I think the twin sister idea is not bad. I mean, it’s Nashville, anything could happen. What if the long-lost twin sister comes back? Oh, and she’s such a devil. She’s such a devil, she’ll come back and be horrible.”

“Rayna will live on forever,” Connie added. “You know, I feel so fortunate I was able to play that character, truly, with all my heart, I love that character so much. Just like when we lose somebody in our lives, the spirit lives on.”

'Friday Night Lights' Creator Reveals What Show's Movie Plot Would Have Been

The plot for the Friday Night Lights movie – which never got made – has been revealed!

Peter Berg, the creator of the fan-favorite show starring Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, and more, went on The Bill Simmons podcast and revealed what the plot would have been.

Peter said he “had a whole pitch that it was going to be based on Mike Leach getting in trouble for allegedly doing something that he most likely didn’t do … [producer] Jason Katims worked pretty hard on it.”

Mike Leach was a coach at Texas Tech in 2009 and was fired after accusations that he treated a player with a concussion poorly. So seemingly, Kyle‘s character (Coach Taylor) would have gone through a similar situation in the movie.
