Late Night Hosts Pay Tribute to Joan Rivers On the Air - Watch Now

The great Joan Rivers passed away yesterday afternoon (September 4), and the world of comedy mourned the loss of a great legend.

The late night hosts – Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Seth Meyers, and Craig Ferguson – paid their respects to the 81-year-old comedienne who always made everyone laugh.

“She’s one of the funniest people in the world ever. We loved her, the crew loved her, everyone loved Joan Rivers. She was fearless. She would come out and say what you were thinking but wouldn’t say it. You would stop, but she wouldn’t stop. A lot of people thought her humor was mean, but she just wanted to make everyone laugh. And she could take a joke just as easily as she could dish it out. … We had her on our very first ‘Tonight Show’ when we took it over. I was so blessed to do that,” Jimmy Fallon said during his tribute.

Craig Ferguson Leaving 'Late Late Show' in December

Craig Ferguson will be exiting The Late Late Show this December when his contract with CBS expires.

The 51-year-old talk show host will mark ten years on the show when he closes his run on the 12:35am time slot.

It was expected that Craig would exit the network after his contract ends as he was not chosen as the successor to David Letterman‘s The Late Show.

“During his 10 years as host, Craig has elevated CBS to new creative and competitive heights at 12:30,” CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said in a release. “He infused the broadcast with tremendous energy, unique comedy, insightful interviews and some of the most heartfelt monologues seen on television. Craig‘s versatile talents as a writer, producer, actor and comedian speak to his great days ahead. While we’ll miss Craig and can’t thank him enough for his contributions to both the show and the network, we respect his decision to move on, and we look forward to celebrating his final broadcasts during the next eight months.”

Who Should Replace David Letterman as 'Late Show' Host? Vote in Our Poll Here!

While many are mourning the fact that David Letterman will be leaving The Late Show next year, many others are already trying to figure out who should replace his role as the talk show host!

Let us take you through some of the names floating around right now:

  • Craig Ferguson is the most obvious choice if CBS decides to promote from within. He has been the host of The Late Late Show for ten years and Letterman even produces that program, so if he has a say, this might be a no brainer.
  • Chelsea Handler announced last week that she plans on leaving E! after eight years on the air when her contract is up at the end of the year. She already has a bunch of offers on the table according to her team. Could this job be one of them?
  • Stephen Colbert‘s contract with Comedy Central for The Colbert Report comes to an end in late 2014 and his form of satirical humor is a favorite among many late night viewers.
  • Jay Leno just ended his longtime run as host of The Tonight Show and while this is probably a huge long shot, you never know if he wants to get back into his old time slot!
  • Neil Patrick Harris seems to be a big favorite among a lot of fans and critics. He has a ton of hosting experience after serving as host of many awards shows and also several stints as guest host on Live! alongside Kelly Ripa over the years. He also has ties to CBS with his series How I Met Your Mother, which just wrapped up after nine seasons.

Other names being thrown into the bucket are Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart, Wanda Sykes, Louis C.K., Whoopi Goldberg, Ryan Seacrest, Arsenio Hall, Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, and even Tina Fey.
