Celebrate the 'Cruel Intentions' 20th Anniversary By Seeing it Again in Theaters

Today is a special day as it’s the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of the teen cult class Cruel Intentions!

The movie was released on March 5, 1999 and while it was only a modest hit at the box office, it has become one of the most beloved movies of the 1990s over the past two decades.

Cruel Intentions is coming back to theaters for one week only to celebrate the anniversary and the re-release opens on March 22.

Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to commemorate the special day. She wrote, “Wait…today 20 years?!? I literally just realized today is the actual anniversary. Well 20 years later I may be even more proud of this film. Not very often do you get to be a part of cinema, that holds the test of time. @rogerkumble you are the most wonderfully disturbed person I know and I love you. @reesewitherspoon @selmablair @ryanphillippe (and not pictured @seanpthomas @vancityjax) you are even better actors and better people then you were then. Forget me- everybody loves this film and I intend to keep it that way.”

Ryan Phillippe Endorses the 'Cruel Intentions' Musical!

Following runs in Los Angeles and New York City, Cruel Intentions: The Musical, is returning to the stage and the movie’s star Ryan Phillippe is all about it!

The musical’s Twitter account tweeted, “Don’t miss the most intoxicating musical in Manhattan. Your reputation depends on it,” to which Ryan responded, “i recommend seeing this if you can. it’s a lot of fun.”

The musical is an adaptation of the 1999 hit film starring Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, and more.

The musical will be staged at Poisson Rouge in New York City beginning Friday, November 17, 2017. Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area!

'Cruel Intentions' TV Series Could Still Be Heading to NBC!

While the highly anticipated Cruel Intentions television series was not picked up to series by NBC during upfront week in May, it still could be happening!

The cast, including the film’s star Sarah Michelle Gellar, have had their pilot options extended and the network is possibly looking at a summer 2017 debut for the series, according to Variety.

Other cable and streaming outlets like Hulu and Freeform have expressed interest in picking up the project if NBC passes.

“We’re still discussing it,” NBC exec Bob Greenblatt told reporters in May. “It falls under the heading of embarrassment of riches. It’s a bit of an outlier for us. There’s no other show like it [on our schedule]. We like it, we’re still discussing it and we’re trying to figure it out.”

Peter Gallagher Joins 'Cruel Intentions' TV Revival

Peter Gallagher has joined the cast of the upcoming Cruel Intentions revival on NBC and he is playing the father of Ryan Phillippe‘s late character!

The series will follow Bash Casey (Taylor John Smith), the son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Ryan in the movie) and Annette Hargrove (played by Reese Witherspoon in the movie).

Peter is set to play “Edward Valmont, a sexy, beguiling, sophisticated, powerful and ruthless billionaire hotel magnate with fingers in many far-reaching financial pies – some legal, some not so much. Edward is delighted to discover that he’s got a long-lost grandson in the newly arrived Bash Casey and once the DNA test proves his claim, Edward immediately starts grooming Bash for a life of impossible wealth and opportunity,” according to Variety.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the series.

'Cruel Intentions' Pilot Casts Reese Witherspoon Role!

NBC has cast Drop Dead Diva‘s Kate Levering in the role of Annette Hargrove, the role originated by Reese Witherspoon in the film version of Cruel Intentions.

The events of the television show will pick up 15 years after the movie, and will bring back Sarah Michelle Gellar in her role as Kathryn Merteuil.

The role of Annette is described as “a genuine, good Christian woman for whom life has not been easy,” EW reports.

Kate is not only a television actress, she also was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in 2001 musical 42nd Street!

Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially joined the upcoming remake of Cruel Intentions!

The 38-year-old actress, who starred in the original 1999 film, confirmed the exciting news on Instagram.

“#throwbackthursday (a bit early in Los Angeles) this picture was taken on the eve of production on the original #cruelintentions. Its me #rogerkumble (director) and #nealmoritz (exec producer) and the other is a picture of us now on the eve of production on the new #cruelintentions.”

SMG continued, “That’s right ‘everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way’ #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv) on the new #Crueltv”
