Cynthia Nixon: Bisexuality is Not A Choice - It's A Fact

Cynthia Nixon has clarified remarks she made about sexuality being a choice.

The 45-year-old actress, who is sporting a shaved head for her role in Wit, recently was quoted in the New York Times as saying that for her, being gay is a choice.

“My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay. I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can’t and shouldn’t be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering,” Cynthia said in a statement to The Advocate.

“However, to the extent that anyone wishes to interpret my words in a strictly legal context I would like to clarify: While I don’t often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have ‘chosen’ is to be in a gay relationship,” she added.

Cynthia Nixon: Rave Reviews for 'Wit'!

Cynthia Nixon attends the opening night after party for her new play, Wit, on Thursday (January 26) at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in NYC.

The 45-year-old actress recently shaved her head to play Vivian Bearing, a woman undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer.

“Fearless doesn’t even begin to describe Nixon‘s performance. She never leaves the stage – the same stage, incidentally, where she delivered her Tony-winning performance in Rabbit Hole in 2006. And from her ‘Hi! How are you feeling today?’ introduction until her rebirth-like valediction, she never fails to captivate,” EW wrote in its review.

Cynthia Nixon: Bald for 'Wit' Role

Cynthia Nixon debuts her bald look on Live with Kelly on Tuesday (January 24).

The 45-year-old actress shaved her head for her role in the play Wit, where she plays a woman undergoing experimental treatment for cancer.

“I like it,” Cynthia said of her new bald look. “I don’t think I’m going to keep it forever, but it’s good for now.”

Cynthia spoke out on her sexuality earlier in the week, telling the New York Times that she disagrees with those who say homosexuality is not a choice.

Cynthia Nixon: Being Gay was a Choice for Me

Cynthia Nixon is speaking out about the controversy about her relationships with her college sweetheart, Danny Mozes, and her current partner, Christine Marinoni.

The 45-year-old actress, who currently stars in Wit on Broadway, was profiled in the New York Times.

“I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me,” Cynthia said.

“A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it’s a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not,” she added.

“I am very annoyed about this issue. Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate,” Cynthia concluded.
