Jordan Peele Says 'Get Out's Sunken Place Is Metaphor for 'Lack of Black Representation In Horror'

Allison Williams is picture perfect as she strikes a pose at a special New York reception for her hit film Get Out held at Mr. Chow on Wednesday (November 29) in New York City.

The 29-year-old actress was joined at the event by her co-star Daniel Kaluuya.

Writer-director Jordan Peele recently discussed what “the sunken place” from Get Out meant to him: “The sunken place is this metaphor for the system that is suppressing the freedom of black people,” Jordan said (via Los Angeles Times).

“It’s the lack of representation of black people in film, in genre,” Jordan continued. “The reason Chris (Daniel) in the film is falling into this place, being forced to watch this screen, that no matter how hard he screams at the screen he can’t get agency across. And that, to me, was this metaphor for the black horror audience, a very loyal fan base who comes to these movies, and we’re the ones that are going to die first. And we yell ‘Get out, get out of the house.’”

Jordan Peele on 'Get Out' Competing as Comedy at Golden Globes: 'I Submitted It As A Documentary'

Jordan Peele made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday (November 15), and shared his thoughts on his “social thriller” film Get Out being submitted as Best Musical/Comedy at the 2018 Golden Globes.

“I submitted it as a documentary,” the 38-year-old writer-director told host Stephen, echoing a tweet he posted earlier that same day, which read, “‘Get Out‘ is a documentary.”

“Here’s the thing, the movie is truth. The thing that resonated with people was truth, so for me it’s more of a historical biopic,” Jordan continued, later adding that “it doesn’t fit into a genre. It sort of subverse the idea of genre.”

That same day, Jordan joined stars of the flick Allison Williams and Daniel Kaluuya, as well as producers Jason Blum and Sean McKittrick at the MoMA’s Contenders Screening of Get Out held at the MOMA in New York City.

Jordan Peele Says 'Get Out' was Inspired By Obama Era: 'Post-Racial Lie'

Jordan Peele flashes a smile alongside Catherine Keener and Daniel Kaluuya while attending their Get Out: Variety Screening Series panel presented by FilmStruck on Monday (October 30) in Los Angeles.

The 38-year-old writer-director, Catherine and Daniel were also joined by co-star Lil Rel Howery as they opened up about the critically acclaimed film.

“The movie was written in the Obama era, which I’ve been calling the post-racial lie,” Jordan recently revealed (via Vanity Fair). “We were in this era where the calling out of racism was almost viewed as a step back… [Donald] Trump was saying that the first black president wasn’t a citizen… There was this feeling like, ‘You know what, there’s a black president. Maybe if we just step back, [Trump] can say his bullshit. No one cares. And racism will be gone.’ That’s the era I imagined this movie would come out in.”

“By the time the movie came out, people were ready to engage in thinking about [racism], and what better way to do it than with a popcorn movie,” Jordan continued. “If you do a lecture about race or some social issue, people feel like maybe you’re talking down to them, like you’re forcing your views on them. If you lead with entertainment, if you get the laugh, if you get the scream, if an audience is propelled to stand and cheer because something happens, then the point is already made and the audience is left to think about why that happened. What truth did that hit on? The moment the police car shows up at the end of this movie, we all know what’s going to happen. The fact that we all know what’s going to happen is the point. That’s the catharsis.”

FYI: Jordan is wearing Citizens of Humanity jeans.
