The news comes just ahead of the Season 5 premiere, which will debut on February 16 at 8 p.m. ET. Season 4 started airing last summer.

“What a joy and an honor to continue the stories of Queen Sugar with our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. On behalf of every producer, editor, costumer, grip, writer, cast member and all departments involved in making this series, we’re delighted to delve into a sixth season and to bring our beautiful audience more of the Bordelon family,” Ava said in a statement.

The next season’s storyline was adjusted to reflect the times amid the pandemic shutdown.

“When Ava came to us with the idea to revamp the storyline for the new season after production was halted due to the pandemic, we knew it was the right decision to give our viewers Ava’s unique perspective on the very real issues impacting their daily lives and the affect the demand for racial equality has had on the Black community and our society as a whole,” said Tina Perry, president of OWN.

“We are proud to announce today the pickup of the show’s sixth season which will air later this year enabling us to further explore the compelling story of the Bordelon family. We are grateful to Ava, her creative team, the incredible cast and tireless crew for all the hard work they have put into the show.”

The cast includes Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and Kofi Siriboe, as well as Nicholas Ashe, Greg Vaughn, Bianca Lawson, Tina Lifford, Omar J. Dorsey, Henry G. Sanders and Timon Kyle Durrett.

Ava DuVernay Discusses Inclusion Riders at 'Queen Sugar' Panel at PaleyFest 2018

Ava DuVernay spoke about inclusiveness and inclusion riders during a Queen Sugar panel discussion at 2018 Paleyfest on Saturday afternoon (March 24) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The executive producer opened up about Frances McDormand referencing inclusion riders during her Oscars acceptance speech.

“I was overjoyed to hear Frances say that. She didn’t have to, and to utter those words on an international stage and to dig into those things that many of us have been working on for a while,” she said.

“Luckily we’re on OWN, and everything that we do, from the offices to our sets really reflects different kinds of cultures,” she said of Queen Sugar.
