Demi Lovato Opens Up About Being Suicidal at Age 7

Demi Lovato is opening up about suicide and suicidal thoughts in her new episode on Dr. Phil, airing Tuesday (March 20).

“The very first time I was suicidal was when I was seven. I had this fascination with death,” the 25-year-old singer said on the show. “I have experienced things that I have not talked about, and I don’t know if I ever will talk about. But at seven, I knew that if I were to take my own life, that the pain would end.”

“It came back several times — when I was struggling with depression, my bipolar disorder. And there was a while there when my mom was afraid to wake me up in the mornings because she didn’t know if she opened the door if I would be alive or not,” Demi continued. “Because every time I cut, it got deeper and deeper.”

Demi also spoke about addiction on the show.

“I think the everlasting addiction in my life has been food. My eating disorder started when I was very young. That’s something that I deal with on a daily basis,” she continued. “It’s kind of the last thing to go.”

“I feel like I’ve conquered my addiction and alcoholism, where I don’t even think about it anymore. But my struggles with my food issues are something that I still deal with,” Demi added. “But I’m growing, and I’m in a really good place today.”

The 25-year-old “Echame la Culpa” singer slayed at her concert at Barclays Center during her Tell Me You Love Me World Tour on Friday night (March 16) in New York City.

During part of the show, Demi‘s tourmates Kehlani and DJ Khaled made a surprise appearance to praise Demi‘s journey.

“What you’ve overcome through trials and tribulations, through dark clouds, you found the sunshine, and now the sun is shining on you forever,” Khaled said. “And every night you come light up the stage and you represent your fans, and that’s so amazing.”

“You give me hope and strength and pride, and every bit of myself that I am — the good side, the bad side, the funny side, the quirky side,” Kehlani added. “You are 100 percent yourself, and that is so rare in this world and this industry. I’m so, so, so, so proud of you, and honored to know you.”

“Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at 9 in the morning, throwing up in the car,” Demi tearfully told the crowd. “And I just remember thinking, ‘This is no longer cute. This is no longer fun. And I’m just like my dad.’ So I took a look at my life and I said, ‘Something has to change, I’ve got to get sober’ — so I did.”

The three superstars were confirmed to appear by David Hogg, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, during an appearance on CNN on Wednesday (March 14).

“We’re gonna have four major independent women that are standing with us and walking beside us, and those are Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. They’re gonna be standing there with us and marching with us and they’re some of the few people that are really coming out and stepping up with us.”

The march is a demonstration in support of common-sense gun control, and will take place on March 24.
