Jennifer Lopez Tells the Story Behind the Iconic Versace Dress

Jennifer Lopez is telling the story behind her iconic green Versace dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards, almost 20 years after she first wore it.

The 50-year-old entertainer wore a recreation of the dress at the Versace show during Milan Fashion Week on Friday (September 20) and it totally was another iconic moment in fashion history.

“She basically just was like, ‘It’s 20 years since the jungle green dress. We’re doing a whole collection on it. Would you walk at the end?’ And I was like, ‘Uh, yeah,’” Jennifer told Vogue in a behind-the-scenes video.

Jennifer revealed that she only wore the dress back in 2000 because her stylist at the time wasn’t able to secure any other looks and it was the only dress that worked. The stylist didn’t even want JLo to wear it since other celebs had been seen in the dress before!

“I didn’t think it was all that risque, to be honest. I was more excited that it was the Grammys. I wasn’t even thinking about the dress that much. I was just excited I had something to wear,” she said.

Jennifer Lopez Wears a Replica of Her Iconic Green Dress at Versace 2020 Fashion Show!

Jennifer Lopez is turning heads with an iconic fashion moment!

The 50-year-old “Waiting for Tonight” superstar recreated history by closing out the Versace show in a replica of her history-making green 2000 Grammy Awards dress during Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020 on Friday (September 20) in Milan, Italy.

If you didn’t know, Google Images was invented because of this dress!

“Fashion fun fact: Google Images was started because @JLo wore a plunging @Versace dress that was held together by a safety pin and a prayer to the Grammys in 2000. The next morning, search volume for a pic of the dress exploded. (Basically, she was trending before there was #trending.) Tonight, exactly two decades after that dress debuted on the runway, she wore an (almost) exact replica to close this season’s show alongside @donatella_versace. And everyone’s response was the same: 🤯,” Derek Blasberg wrote on his Instagram.

“So this just happened…🌿✨ @donatella_versace #jungledress @versace #stillgoingstrong #20yearanniversary #catwalk,” Jennifer wrote on Instagram.

Donatella Versace Apologizes to China for Offending Country With T-Shirt

Versace, as well as its artistic director Donatella Versace, are apologizing.

The Italian luxury brand issued an apology on Sunday (August 11) after one of the T-shirts in the brand’s collection was criticized on China’s social media platform Weibo for identifying the autonomous territories of Hong Kong and Macau as countries.

On the shirts, there are a list of “city-country” pairs, including “New York-USA,” “Beijing-China,” “Hong Kong-Hong Kong,” and “Macau-Macau,” which has been criticized. The company says that they have stopped selling the shirts, and also destroyed them.

Versace reiterates that we love China deeply, and resolutely respect China’s territory and national sovereignty,” they said in a statement.

“I am deeply sorry for the unfortunate recent error that was made by our Company and that is being currently discussed on various social media channels. Never have I wanted to disrespect China’s National Sovereignty and this is why I wanted to personally apologize for such inaccuracy and for any distress that it might have caused,” Donatella said in a statement.

Versace‘s brand ambassador Yang Mi revealed she was ending her contract because of the issue: “China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty are sacred and inviolable at all times,” she said in a statement.

Donatella Versace Opens Up About Her Friendship With Lady Gaga

Donatella Versace is on the cover of Attitude‘s January 2019 issue, out on December 6.

Here’s what the Versace icon had to say…

On her views on Donald Trump: “It’s scary, it cannot go on like this. And I know for that, in my position in fashion, we can still have a conversation about politics. It’s so horrible. This is like going back to the past, looking back in history. We live in a very scary moment for our freedom, for the freedom of everybody. So, this is a moment to talk about it and say, ‘Guys, listen’: don’t be seduced by what you think is a strong man. That’s not a strong man; that’s a weak man using those words to put fear in you.”

On Lady Gaga and the song “Donatella”: “I adore her. The song arrived quite a while after we first knew each other. Gaga is a very emotional person, she’s very insecure, which I like about her. Every true artist is insecure. We’ve become good friends and we talk so much. I’m so happy about the movie. A Star Is Born. I went to the premiere with her and she was crying. I said, ‘Enough of this crying. Smile, you’ve made it.’ I hope she wins an Oscar.”

On growing up amongst the gay community: “Yes, [I was always] around gay men. But not only gay men, but by artists, real artists: people who left a mark on history. I mean, I met Andy Warhol. I don’t think of him as just a gay person, these people are artists. I had the privilege through Gianni [Versace] and through the gay community to meet intellectual people: to become accustomed, to be educated, to learn about the culture. I was a normal classical girl who went to school and studied history, which I loved as you can see in this house, but my mind was always a clash between this and what was around pop culture and high culture and history.”
