Dwyane Wade Says Zaya Knew Her Gender Identity for 9 Years

Dwyane Wade is opening up further about his daughter Zaya coming out as transgender during his appearance on Good Morning America on Tuesday (February 18) in New York City.

“She’s known it for nine years. She’s known since she was three years old,” the 38-year-old former NBA star said during his appearance. “Along this way we’ve asked questions and we’ve learned. But she’s known.”

“I knew early on that I had to check myself,” he added. “That’s what I knew. I knew early on that I had to ask myself questions.”

“I’ve been a person in a locker room that has been a part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and the wrong words myself,” Dwyane said. “As I got older and I watched my daughter grow, I had to go and look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Who are you? What are you going to do if your child comes home and says, “Dad, I’m not a boy … I’m a trans girl.” What are you going to do?’ That was my moment of real.”

“I think when the conversation we had — the one thing about it, for parents, is have conversations with your kids. Zaya, early on, knew two things. She knew straight and she knew gay. But Zaya started doing more research,” he continued.

“She is the one who sat down with us as a family and said, ‘Hey, I don’t think I’m gay.’ And she went down the list. ‘This is how I identify myself, this is my gender identity, I identify myself as a young lady. I think I’m a straight trans because I like boys.’ So it was a process for us to sit down with our daughter and find out who she is and what she likes, and not put something on her,” he added.

Dwyane Wade Recalls Telling Gabrielle Union He Fathered a Child While They Were on a Break

Dwyane Wade is opening about the “hardest thing” he ever had to do.

In his upcoming ESPN documentary, D. Wade: Life Unexpected, the 38-year-old retired NBA player recalled telling wife Gabrielle Union that he had fathered a child with another woman while they were on a break.

Dwyane and the 47-year-old actress started dating in 2009, but took a break a few years later. In 2013, Dwyane welcomed son Xavier with Basketball Wives star Aja Metoyer.

“I had a child with someone else and I had to tell her,” Dwyane says in the doc, according to Entertainment Tonight. “Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating.”

“When you hold something in that you know is going to come out and you have this information and you know it’s gonna f–k somebody’s life up, that you care about, that you love, if it don’t hurt you, then you’re not human,” Dwyane added. “Me and Gab just went through something that you never want to go through and we still came out of it.”

Dwyane and Gabrielle got back together not long after the birth of Xavier, and married in 2014.

In late 2018, the couple welcomed daughter Kaavia via surrogate, which Dwyane says helped him make the decision to retire so he can spend more time with his kids.

“That was my push away from the game,” Dwyane says, referring to his 2019 retirement. “It was time. There just came a point when I had to look in the mirror and say, ‘What more do you want out of this?’”

D. Wade: Life Unexpected debuts on ESPN on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Dwyane Wade Explains Why He Went Public with Daughter Zaya's Journey

Dwyane Wade is opening up about his decision to go public with his daughter Zaya‘s journey.

The 38-year-old former professional basketball player and his wife Gabrielle Union‘s 12-year-old came out as transgender this week.

“Well, we’re not the only family that deals with all the things we’ve spoken about,” Dwyane told ET. “We’re not the only family that had to deal with surrogacy, to bring our daughter [Kaavia] into the world. We’re not the only family that’s had to deal with gender expression, gender identity, sexuality, with their child.”

“We understand the position we’ve been put in, especially in our community, and even though it’s not always a popular thing to speak out on issues that people are uncomfortable with or not as educated on, but this is the platform that God gave me and my family,” he continued. “So, we use it.”

“For me, it’s always about being able to adapt and being able to learn, and always being able to grow,” Dwyane added. “I think coming from the inner city of Chicago early on, I was kind of closed-minded on a lot of things. And I’ve been with my wife, traveling the world, meeting people, going to different places, I’ve learned to keep my mind open, keep my eyes open, keep my heart open, keep my thoughts open.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to do as I’m growing into the man that I’ve always dreamed of becoming,” he said.

While speaking about his upcoming ESPN documentary, D. Wade: Life Unexpected, Dwyane shared, “I face a lot of different elements in the documentary, so whatever it is that speaks to you, hopefully, it’s something that you can pull from an inspiration to inspire, that would be ideal for me.”

Dwyane Wade Talks About His Child Coming Out as Transgender

Dwyane Wade is opening up to Ellen DeGeneres about his 12-year-old child’s gender identity.

The 38-year-old basketball player talked about how he and wife Gabrielle Union educated themselves on the LGBTQ+ community after their daughter Zaya came out as transgender.

“First of all, me and my wife Gabrielle, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud allies as well. We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question, our child comes home with an issue, our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, to give the best feedback we can. And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it,” Dwyane said during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home… first, Zion. I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion. Zion, born as a boy, came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I’m ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I’d love for you guys to call me Zaya,’” Dwyane said.

“So, that was our job to go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship we have. My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of Pose. We just tried to figure out as much information as we [could] to make sure we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self,” he added.

Dwyane also said, “Once Zion came home and said ‘call me Zaya‘ and was ready to take on this, I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’ Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her.”

Last year, Dwyane responded to critics of the crop top and nails that Zaya, then known publicly as Zion, was wearing at Thanksgiving dinner.
