Senator Marco Rubio Posts John Lewis Tribute, But Uses Photo of Elijah Cummings

Marco Rubio, the senior senator from Florida, made a huge mistake when he took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late John Lewis.

Congressman Lewis was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement and he sadly lost his battle to cancer this week.

Rubio posted a tribute to Lewis, but he included a photo of him with the late civil rights legend Elijah Cummings instead.

“It was an honor to know & be blessed with the opportunity to serve in Congress with John Lewis a genuine & historic American hero. May the Lord grant him eternal peace,” Rubio captioned the post.

The tweet was finally deleted around 25 minutes after it was published, but it had already gone viral and you can see a screencap here. At the time of this posting, Rubio‘s Twitter profile photo is still the picture of him and Cummings.

Congressman Elijah Cummings Passes Away at 68

Democratic Congressman from Maryland Elijah Cummings has sadly passed away at the age of 68.

The longtime politician was one of the major people leading investigations into President Donald Trump. His office said he passed away from “complications concerning longstanding health challenges,” CNN reports.

The Congressman was chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, which was one of the key panels involved in Trump‘s impeachment inquiry. It’s not yet clear who will take over as chairman of the Oversight Committee.

Trump did respond to the tragic news of his death, tweeting, “My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!”

Our thoughts are with Representative Cummings‘ family and loved ones.
